Heard a friend that re-did one of these amps. It HAD a very nice "vintage" tone, characteristic of Class "A" cathode-biased EL34 amps. I told him to just replace the electrolyic caps. This maybe a problem, as most of the power/bias power supply run off cans (AFAIK). Anyhow, once replaced just ramp it up and enjoy.UNFORTUNATELY, he decided to "upgrade" much of the components in the signal path (simply for the sake of changing parts). Modern caps (I think Infinicaps) and upgraded resistors did NOT help, in this amp. It made the tone very sterile (esp in midrange-high transistion area). Basically, made the amp sound like a cold-biased, 6L6GC Class AB topology tone. After much playing with parameters, he re-inserted some of the original caps/resistors and kinda got back to the original tone (though still somwewhat cold sounding). I guess this new caps/resistor can take awhile to really break-in?
I think there maybe a lesson somewhere.
