Think of the series pass regulator tube as being the power tube of a single ended amp. That's essentially what its function is except it responds to the driver tubes sensing any change in voltage and ups the voltage to compensate for any variations in draw.
As such the component takes on the colorations of the tube installed in those positions, having almost the exact same characteristics that you hear in the actual signal path but IMHE, even more pronounced ( assuming that the caps and such are all in good shape).
