1. what is an op amp?Short for "Operational Amplifier". In modern speak in audio applications it usually refers to an op-amp integrated circuit, or a "chip"..... as opposed to a number of discrete components. [Although early op-amps were in fact built using discrete components]. Op-amps are generally low power integrated circuit devices used in gain stage building blocks for preamps and at the analog output stages of DACs, CD players, etc. Op-amp chips are generally dirt cheap and easy to design around. All the complexity resides within the chip itself leaving the designer to choose only a few outboard components to set his desired parameters for the building block.
"An Operational amplifier is a very high gain DC differential amplifier that uses one or more external feedback networks to control its response and characteristics. External resistors or capacitors are connected to the op-amp in a variety of different ways to form basic "building block" circuits such as, Inverting, Non-Inverting, Voltage Follower, Summing, Differential, Integrator and Differentiator type amplifiers."
Some audio designers frown on op-amp circuits due to their very high negative feedback and complaints that they simply don't sound as good as fully discrete designs. This is highly debatable within the audiophile community so take either extreme view with a grain of salt.
Does your Oppo not sound as nice as it should? I'm curious to know what you are trying to accomplish by adding an external DAC to your Oppo. What model Oppo do you presently have?
That said, I once owned the Oppo HA-1 Headphone Amp/DAC. Stellar specs and great versatility but only so so sound. I ended up selling it in short order.
