REturning to the subject of the post, separate preamps made sense when you wanted to separate low powered signals (phono) from stronger signals that might influence them. THey also made sense when you wanted to add body or soften the sound of early SS amps with a tube front end. I think most of these reasons are history.
GIven the cost of a set of interconnects, it makes sense to have one box.
HAving said that, a passive volume control will sound different than a well designed preamp circuit.
