You could also build a second solid state system. And frankly I am interested in auditioning Ayre because of one main difference between the designer and most of the rest of the SS industry - they actually acknowledge that parts quality actually sounds different and don't just pick up a parts from the parts bin and copy some schematic from some textbook and then put the cheapest possible parts they can find into a box and then make the box as pretty as humanly possible (which usually winds up tacky). In other words they are the SS approach to what Peter Qvortrup does - original designs and go through every single part to find the best sound and even design and make the parts when nothing satisfies them and then also buy competing products to compare and pull it apart and see what if anything they can learn.
And to be fair you can say the same thing about Nelson Pass.
When you start buying audiophile grade gear at these sorts of higher level pricing - to me pride of ownership and knowing that the designers actually give a crap about sound reproduction and that they actually LISTEN to the products they sell - matters. Of course you still may not agree with their end result but at least you know they actually worked on it and believe in it.
I can tell you that when it comes time for me to build a SS system - the companies high on my list will be Pass Labs, Ayre Acoustics, Parasound(H/T), Anthem (H/T) and interestingly most of the stuff is accessibly priced - it is not outrageous or just selling you 1/2 inch metal bling.
Granted I am more looking for a SS amp that will be a Reference grade piece for audio equipment reviewing. Something that can basically drive virtually every speaker imaginable and when I leave Asia and the voltage here (UK/HK) and still be able to use it in Canada. With the AN gear I can just have a two minute solder job but SS it seems to depend on the maker.
SS often has a sort of sheen etch fatigue factor that bothers me over time.
But my M3 Phono MKiii is really very good and I think with it in control a SS amp won't sound too much like ass. I have balanced outputs now too so I am keen on trying a high grade SS amp.
