Tosh from a biases manufacturer that doesn't build speakers!

An wrong about Mark Levinson's CDP volume control - it was analogue not digital - that's why I chose an ML over a Wadia - the latter DID use digital volume control. Any why I could spend a good chunk of cash on good speakers as I didn't need a preamp.

There is no doubt that a $500 source into a £5000 speaker will sound better than the other way around.
