RE: Pass Labs

Yes Old Bob and I agree with the point that Charles makes above as to the importance of the source.

Here is a true story in illustration.

A few years ago a friend ran a small shop which dealt in lower end hi-fi, radios, TVs etc. He decided to try selling higher end audio as it was his personal hobby. So he got an agency for one of the most respected professional and home audio speaker brands in the UK.

He wasn't selling many of them subsequently. In particular, a regular customer who was a good pianist came into the shop on several occasions and on hearing the speakers, the brand of which is an acronym, said " That acronym must mean something to do with crap piano sound."

A few weeks later my friend took delivery of his demonstration stock of a high end CD player brand( Wadia as it happens). The pianist customer could not believe his ears and immediately completely reversed his opinion of the speakers. People always blame the speakers first unless they are made aware that they are listening to one of the other components.

However as you are also raising the question of money, first establish how you feel about your Oppo in combination with your new equipment based upon what you hear rather than in theory. If you liked it before you may continue to like it. Or you may find it has failings that you are willing to put up with if only temporarily ( you don't have to change everything at once). However if what you hear is disappointing and you really do need to upgrade right now then my experience is that you should ensure that you have sufficient budget to do the job properly and not just buy something which will ultimately prove to be only a change from the Oppo and not a significant improvement. This will lead to yet another change and yet more expenditure. I guess I am also saying make sure that you know what you want to achieve and that the component under consideration will do it. Many people waste money just by buying " what they fancy" or what is the flavour of the month. The next month the fancy and fashion changes and you have the making of a gearhead, never satisfied, always changing equipment.

The speakers make the most difference to the sound of the music. The front end makes the most difference to the music.
