I've read that the volume control can make or break a preamp. It's interesting that Charles and Victor have differing opinions on relays.
In my limited experience I found the Placette Passive to sound excellent - or at least very transparent with no detectable "sound" of it's own. The Placette uses discrete resistors and relays to switch them in and out.
I've also owned a couple BAT preamps - the VK-20 and VK-30SE. Both were very nice. They used some type of electronic volume control.
My CJ Premier 18LS used discrete resistors in the volume control and I believe they were switched with FET switch integrated circuits. It was a so-so preamp. It just lacked dynamics and frequency extension that I expect in a good preamp.... I can't say that was due to the volume control design.
I have yet to hear an ARC preamp (or integrated amp) that I really like. I've owned the LS16, LS16mkII, LS25mkII. Also the VSi-60 integrated. Not their high-end line but I've heard better in other manufacturer's entry to mid-tier line. My Aesthetix Calypso preamp was noticeably better. My Rogue Cronus Magnum integrated is better than the ARC VSi-60. I also like my Ayre AX-7e a lot.
One of my best sounding preamps was the Cary SLP-05 with motorized analog volume pot.
