I will have to disagree with Charles regardless the relays - in our experience they can be used with no issues.My problem with relays in that particular application is their audible chatter as you change the volume setting, other than this a properly selected relay will give you great results.
Speaking of solid state switches - they too can be used successfully. We have been using them for over 20 years, in thousands of units, with no single damage due to ESD or overdriving.
But personally I would not use them for source selection, for the reasons, mentioned by Charles below.
However, my personal preference is against any integrated solid state volume control.
On the final note - my advice is not to buy a cheap motorized pot, but to rather obtain a good quality pot, and then build a motor drive for it, it is not all that hard. Many years ago I built such a four-gang volume control for balanced circuit, using the largest Alps pots (40mm Black Beauty model), a small motor and a clutch, and it cost very little. I could post the picture if anyone was curious.
