RE: Ayre VX-5 On/Off control via AyreLink Level Signaling

Hello Dan,

Depending on the "brick" you are using, it may be possible to modify it - if it is openable... Almost certainly there is a 3-pin regulator inside. If you are really lucky it will have a 4th "shutdown" pin and you wouldn't need a relay. Another possibility is that virtually all 3-pin regulators need both an input and output capacitor to keep them from oscillating. If you look on the datasheet for that particular regulator, you could reduce both capacitors to the minimum possible value needed to keep the it from oscillating. As the load on the power supply is so low - perhaps 1mA for the regulator and another 2mA for the AyreLink, you wouldn't need much capacitance to keep the ripple voltage low enough to work well. It will discharge much more quickly then, and it is a much more "intelligent" approach than the "brute force" method I suggested before of loading down the output. Remember that the input caps are storing all of the energy, and the regulator is trying to maintain the full voltage even as those input caps are discharging. They are likely several hundreds (if not several thousands) of microfarads - which is needed if you are drawing hundreds of milliamps. But when you are drawing only 2 or 3 milliamps, you don't need all that capacitance for ripple reduction and it just makes the lightly-loaded "brick" take a long time to discharge.

As far as the upgrades, we can currently turn it around within 3 to 5 business days. But that always varies according to the workload. It's best to call before sending it in. I expect it will be longer in another month or two as we plan to introduce a new product that will be keeping everybody busy. If you can live without it now, that would be a safer bet for a quick turn-around. (I would still call and ask for either Ryan or Michael, just to be sure my numbers are accurate.)

Not only should you be able to get rid of the fans, but I think you will be very pleasantly surprised at the improvement in sound quality. The VX-5 is great, but the Twenty version is a marked improvement.

Hope this helps,
Charles Hansen
