I assume your still using the crossover built into the speaker? If so I can't think of any reason that the speaker would require any more power if it was tri wired or just wired up with a single cable.
What I suspect is that the impedance on your speakers dip really low and it is loading the amp heavily. Look at the impedance curve in the specs and find the lowest point. Make sure your amp can handle that without smoking the outputs. Some speakers can go down to one ohm, almost a direct short circuit to the amp.
As for bi wiring and tri wiring I could never understand the benefit to that. If someone has a good technical explanation, I'd love to hear it.
