I experienced the same problem with a used (i). The problem was a bad ac transformer. Mine was repaired by Cary in a very expited manner and has performed flawlessly since. The (r) was not available at the time of my repair but if I was in your shoes there would be no doubt that I would choose the upgrade that would include the repair. You are effectively getting the upgrade for about $200. For the improvements that all who have heard it proclaim, you are getting a major bargain particularily in that you will be recieving a 3 year warranty as a bonus. Count your blessings and get it done! You won't look back. So far as getting on the "upgrade path," technologies progress. At least with a company like Cary, ARC, BAT, etc. the opportunity to upgrade is open should we choose to jump but many don't feel compelled to upgrade while some do. Ain't it great that we can if we want? Good luck!
