Re: Cary amp heading back for repairs... (+ question about r upgrade)

Sorry to hear about your popping fuse problem with the V12i.

The "R" upgrade came about as a result of the input stage that Dennis Had developed for the AES/Cary SixPac monoblock amp. Dennis often uses the 'budget' AES product line as a place to experiment and test before implementing changes to the Cary product line. The "R" upgrade is basically a higher gain 12BZ7 tube input stage. I'm not familiar enough but this may also involve rewiring the tube socket and possibly a few other components.

If you can afford it, I would go for the "R" upgrade for a number of reasons: 1)You need the amp repaired anyway. 2)Why not go for the better sonics as well. 3)You get a 3 year warranty. 4)Shipping costs will be the same regardless. 5)Better resale value should you ever sell the V12R.

$500 isn't exactly pocket change but it might be well worth it in this case. If it were me, I would go for the "R" upgrade.
