Dan,I just got around to checking my Adcom GTP-350 tuner preamp. Sure enough, the right channel was about 1.5 dB stronger than the left. The balance pot shaft had fine splines, so I pulled it off, set the control to the most equal setting and put the knob back on with the pointer as close to 12 o'clock as I could. The pointer ended up at 11:45., but setting it to 12 seems to make no difference. In the process, I also discovered the low frequency response in the left channel rolls off a little sooner than in the right. It's probably not audible, but I know it's there, so now I need to fix that as well. That means going inside and trying to find the offending circuit. The balance control being off did affect the imaging and I'll probably fix the circuit there as well one of these days.
Just goes to show you--you can't take anything for granted.
