Home Amp/Preamp Asylum

Looking for a new Amp or Preamp? If you're after tubes, post over here.

Something is very odd here!

I've read what you've quoted from Spectrum, but it simply doesn't make sense to me.

They claim that their amps are digital from start to finish (with conversion to analogue at the speaker terminals), yet the digital version is more costly than the analogue one! Now if the amp is 100% digital, the digital version should surely be far cheaper, as (as they also claim in their tech talk) 2 or maybe 3 conversion stages are not required because of their all-digital architecture. A contradiction here?

In an attempt to clarify this I have today written to Spectrum. Here is what I asked:

"I have been reading an entertaining argument on the Audio Asylum where your products are discussed (starts here: http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/amp/messages/38136.html). I read some extracts from this discussion with disbelief, although some quotes come straight from your website.

For example this quote apparently from your tech talk: "Direct digital input is available as an option on the Musician II and is standard on the Troubadour". This after you explain that your amps are unique in not having to convert analogue to digital. Why then is it an optional extra to be able to by-pass the A-D device you must have in the standard analogue-only-input model? Surely for a digital amplifier doing all its work in the digital domain (except the D-A at the speaker posts), the base model should be digital-only input as no A-D is required and thus cheaper to build. The upgrade to the more comprehensive digital and analogue version should surely be from a digital-only version, not an analogue only one.

Clarification would be appreciated.

Regards"

I'll let you know the answer! Hopefully we can get to the bottom of what appears to be contradictory elements in what Spectrum are saying.
