I'm no techie either. Someone else will have to jump in to give the full technical explanation.Short and sweet of it is that the conversion from PCM (redbook) to PWM (used in most digital-switching amplifiers) is not some direct and easy to implement mathematical conversion. The DSD to PWM conversion is *supposed* to be easier though.
There is some further discussion on this on the Solar Hifi forum Sep/Oct 2003?) on Audio Circle.
Then there is "DAX" which is a group of engineers and students that are going out to the DIY community to help them finish developing their technology- http://www.digitalamplification.com/
This is after two years of development.Texas Instruments (what Panasonic uses and was based on TACT) appears to be one of the leaders in this area. Sony looks like they are having some issues with it. The others (Ice, PS Audio, Tripath, Spectron etc) keep talking about it, but have yet to produce a meaningful result.
So we have a couple issues to refine with digital amplification. The conversion of the input data (PCM, DSD or analog), as well as the amplification topology in itself.
Even though I like what I am hearing with traditional SS/tube amplification better, I *do* think that digital amplification is where 90% of us will be in 5 to 10 years. LOTS more to come.
