The EF-86 input tube is a large determinant of the sound, as well as gain. We decided to lower the gain, especially as we went without NFB, by wiring the EF-86 in Triode. We also went from 6DJ8 in the second stage to 12AT7. The combination, EF-86 Triode, no NFB, and Ultra Linear output gave a sound indistinguishable from Triode output.
And we got to keep the 60 Horses! The 94 dB efficient 4 Pis are well driven by the 45's, but as you mention, it really isn't enough. Especially with the JBL's 12 LB. motors. 60 Watts now, that is what was missing from my life!
Interesting sidelight: When I arrived in Portland from my cross country jaunt, Steve was prepared to ditch the circuit in favor of his beloved 300B variants. He thought it was grainy and harsh with every combination.
We went ahead and cleaned up the bias supply problems I was having and completed the amps as above. Taking them up to his listening room he was astounded at the beauty of the sound being made in contrast to his units. He was using Sovtek KT-88s and I had the new production Gold Lions in mine. Never known a tube to present such a marked difference in sound.
