The best s/s that I've heard sound just about as good as the recordings they're playing. To be clear, the quality of the recording is much more important to the sound than the characteristics of the particular amp. Bear in mind I'm talking about what is "mid-fi" to a lot of people around here. In my price range all the "practical" considerations favoring s/s apply, viz. price, reliability, maintainability, power. In terms of practicality AND sound my Class D Audio SDS amp is a phenomenal bargain at about $650. Top highs are a bit bright admittedly but that's an issue mainly are recordings that are too bright to begin with. I'm totally UNconvinced that the SDS is less accurate than tube amps at several times its price.
My most recent Pass Labs X150.5 is better though it no longer qualifies as a cheap amp. For what I paid for mine used, what tube amp will touch it for transparency, bass, and PRaT?
NOT the 51st state, eh!?!
