I used to think tubes had a certain essential magic that helped me to connect with my music better. But it turned out I really just needed better speakers ;-)
Solid state (including printed circuit boards, IC w/ negative feedback) gives me the performance I want: Turns out that the sound of ultra high-spec gear isn't cold, sterile or uninvolving at all, unless someone went out of their way to make a recording sound that way (most don't). I used to think that a certain level of sonic performance required point-to-point wired, no-feedback tube amps with carefully-selected parts and the right tubes (TJ mesh plate 45 and 300b for instance). But with my current solid state system, I hear all of the old magic--and then some--without the bother.
Even if I wanted to, implementing the active crossovers, multiple amps and digital room correction in tubes would be An Adventure.
I still enjoy the occasional tube project though, and mini integrated amps tend to follow me home.
