RE: Why Choose Solid State?

I can think of a few reasons that had me switch to solid-state just a couple weeks ago. But I've owned several solid-state and tube pieces over the decades.

1) Leave solid-state gear powered ON all day w/o concern for tube wear, rebiasing, and replacement cost.

2) Typically more efficient with lower heat output.

3) Less danger of burning down the house if left unattended for days.

4) Typically cleaner and more transparent overall with tighter bass and great dynamics.

That being said, you'll notice that most of my reasons are not based on sonics. If they made a solid-state amp that had most of the characteristic sound of a good tube amp but the best of solid-state, I'd be all over it. I think I'm closer than ever with my current SS mono blocks but I have much more listening to do.

I haven't sold my tube amp just yet. ;-)

There are outstanding solid-state amps and outstanding tube amps. In my experience most tube amps sound outstanding. There are fewer solid-state amps that sound outstanding. It's more challenging trying to set up a great sounding solid-state system. At least that has been my experience.

Tubes usually sound great. Great sounding solid-state harder to find.
