Re: Review: Audible Illusions M3a Preamplifier (long)

I owned a AI M3A for about 2 years and before that I had an AI M3 for about 3 years. Although the M3A is a good preamp and also a good value, my system really was unleashed when I upgraded to the Convergent Audio Technology (CAT) SL1 Ultimate. Even at more than twice the price of the M3A, I think the Ultimate's improvement over the AI was well worth it. The big improvements were in transparency, speed, soundstaging, detail and dynamics. As good as the M3A is, the CAT made it sound quite inferior. That said, I think the M3A is a good value, just not a giant killer. I've also owned a CJ PV11 which I think is also a great value. I actually preferred the PV11 over the M3A, but there were trade offs. The PV11 seemed to provide more natural vocals and it was always very musical. The M3A had more powerful dynamics and slightly better bass. I'm glad you're enjoying your AI, I did for about 5 years, but there are "better" preamps IMHO.
