Re: Review: Audible Illusions M3a Preamplifier (long)

That is a very well written review Auditious1. Thanks!

It is quite obvious that you love your AIM3A, and you should, as it is a great preamp. When you consider what you get for the price it is (almost) a hi-end bargain.

However, my experience differed slightly from yours. I owned an M3A (with the standard phono section)for a year or so, and I really enjoyed it. But unlike you, I found mine to be extremely noisy. I could hear tube noise from my listening position 8 feet away. I tried many tubes and could never quite lick the problem.

In addition, the steps on the attenuators were so far apart that the high gain design made for an extremely limited control of the volume (even with the dip switches were set in the low gain position) when used with my McCormack DNA .05 amp. That said, I really enjoyed the AI's beautiful sound. It was really a great match with the McCormack excepting the gain issue. It looked cool too!

All my gear has changed since then, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for the M3A.

Just my op.
