Back when I built my Stereo 70, the tubes that were standard, easily availble, and cheap are now verging on collector's items, some with unbelieveable prices. But in 1960 it never entered my mind to try different tubes to see how they sounded. And as for modding the unit, that just wasn't even a consideration. As I recall, at the time it was felt that it was the transformers that were heart and soul of the ST-70, the critical elements that gave it its great sound. I remember meeting my first very rich audiophile around 1962, who said if there were ever a museum of the history of hi-fi, the ST-70 would have to have a place of honor in it. I used it to drive a pair of AR 3s, and I thought it sounded wonderful. I often wonder what I would think now. I probably would still like it a lot.
