Everything old is new again. Back in the mid 60's when I built my original ST-70, there was no internet. I wasn't an EE; just a happy hobbyist and was ecstatic when the ST-70 passed the "burn" test and more than happy with the sound. It did not occur to me that I could change the sound or make it better by swapping out tubes. It was enough to enjoy the amazement of my friends and acquaintances who were taken aback by the superior sound of my unusual rig. In the years that I used it there were no problems and I never had to replace anything. Fast forward 45+ years and there is a brave new world of choice for these elegant old amplifiers, as well as an immense library of communal knowledge and experience just a mouse click away. Now that I know can, must I? I'm pretty happy with what I'm hearing but curious about what "different" or "better" sounds like. I guess I'll stick my toes in and see what happens. I don't know about buying $300 tubes though.
The technology of a sufficiently advanced civilization will be virtually indistinguishable from magic.
