TVC driver possibly 1544 or 1676

I want to drive my Sowter transformer volume control from a parafed device. The TVC is low on inductance and so is difficult to drive directly off the 5687 anode as the cap value would be very large.
I would like to be able to ring a few changes, so I could choose 1:1, or 2:1 stepdown (probably the mode I will use) or even 4:1 stepdown.
What transformer would be recommended. On the face of it the 1544 would seem appropriate as the spec sheet says it will do 10K to 2.5K as a 2:1 stepdown.
Is there a better option?
