I hope the highs on the new model are not so abrasive as they seem to be on the older models. I bought a pair 15 years ago and had to sell after about 6 months because the highs seemed downright harsh .......

Can you use another wall to get more distance behind the desk? If you can put the speakers on stands just to the sides of the desk so that the distance between their centers is the same as the distanc .......

Actually, I prefer mono FM to stereo for background music; doesn't matter where you are in the room then. But you are right, FM has really gone down hill. .......

I have my Altec Granada's on a 9' sided triangle with the apex about a foot behind my head and I consider that a near field set up. Speakers are facing the apex and it sounds great. They just disappea .......

They are similar, but I think the silver micas are a bit warmer. I always do A/B testing of the final coupling cap when breadboarding, and in every case I have preferred the silver mica over the Teflo .......

Based on what? My opinion is based on A/B listening tests performed against quite a few other caps in a working amp. Some improvements were more subtle than others, but there was a very audible improv .......

You may not need anything but the silver mica. I have been using a 0.1uf Russian silver mica for all coupling caps to the final stage and have been very with the results. You might want to give a try .......

I have never heard it that I am aware of. My main speakers are JBL Granada's two ways with a single horn for mid and upper, and if they "shout" I don't know what it sounds like because they sound fine .......

The quality of cd recordings is better today than it was back then. In most cases it is pretty darn good. And the convenience is hard to beat. .......

I can't tell from the photo, but if those pieces are metal just have them tack welded back together. Any decent welding shop should be able to do it for their minimum fee. .......

That is all I have ever used it for, is to get me in the ball park. I was surprised that the first cap ended up being so large, but I have been trying different combinations and I will probably get it .......

Just got through changing out the first cap. I paralleled a 2uf cap (all I have) with the 1uf for 3uf total and the voltage came right on up to over 350vdc. I changed the load resistor to 20k and it d .......

Not sure I understand Dave. I have a 50k resistor for a load in the sim. The voltage in the sim is ok (340-350vdc) it's the actual circuit that I am having trouble with. I am getting 275vdc with it. : .......

I played with the cap and load in psud2 and did not get too much difference, but I will try changing the cap in the psu in the morning and see what happens. That seems kind of high for that cap though .......

I had a pair of Hammond 125e's on my parts self, so I used those. They seem to be doing a good job. The article says that the output is about 8 watts, but it doesn't say if that is the total for both .......

I'll have to try that. I know my digital cassette makes great copies of cd's, but I have yet to try it on vinyl. Though it seems that would be going backwards. Sure would be handy though. .......

The 75 on Amazon for $20 are a knock off and the quality is in question. Amazon does have the Wago brand as well and I got 32 of those for $20. They look like much better quality. Will report back aft .......

There are several out here that will do a good job, just make sure it measures mutual conductance directly, that the readings are in gm's and that the literature says that it measures it directly. Man .......

Buy a good tube tester that measures mutual conductance directly and test them all yourself. That way you will know which ones have similar gm and you will have a tube tester for future use. ::: TOPI .......

The tuner has not been used a whole lot, and with a good strong station it sounds great. I actually prefer a mono tuner for background music like I am using it in this case. That is why I have kept it .......

I was thinking I will compare the two already suggested, 150k with 0.22uf and 330k with 0.1uf. For the 0.22uf I would have to switch to a Russian k40-y9 Teflon unit, which is a pretty good cap too. :: .......

I believe that those are emission only testers, but IF they are working properly they will tell you if there are any major problems with a tube (shorts, etc) and they will tell you the relative streng .......

It sort of looks like a choke, but has too many wires for a standard one. The red and brown wires are marked B and P in that order and the yellow and black are marked 600 ohms while the white and b .......

Quite honestly, at my age I don't think I would hear the difference.It would be mostly on the high end I believe. I still think I get at least 90% of the sound for a fraction of the cost with the 125e .......

Sounds like a good setup, but I am using an old amp psu for the psu for the breadboard and I think I would have to quite a bit of reworking and rewiring to get to that point. I will see if I can think .......

I have done this many times with tube rectifiers with no trouble. None of the circuits were directly coupled, and the ones I have been working on lately are not either. I will keep your advice in mind .......

Sounds like you need to use just a bit larger drill bit so the screw doesn't expand the plastic so much. That should keep it from breaking while still getting enough grip to pull out the offending pie .......

I don't have the large choke shown in the schema above, the largest I have is 15H. I tried that, but could not get the circuit to work. I don't know if it is the choke that is the problem or someth .......

Sorry, but I can not agree with that. The srpp 45 I breadboarded in this thread can use either a 45 or a 2a3 as an output tube, and though it will not be optimized for one of them, both sound very goo .......

I tend toward Sylvanias myself, but I have never tried any 12v units because the 6v for the filaments is much easier to come with most of the transformers I have used. Might have to give it a try thou .......

The Chinese 845's are not that expensive and some of them sound quite good. According to the plate curves it seems to be fairly linear there. Cost wise there is no comparison, sonic wise I have not ha .......

My workshop is roughly 30' by 40' and it works great with the speakers about 8' apart and pointed right at the listening position. They are out about 15' from the end wall behind the listening positio .......

I think I have now tweaked the 845 about as much as I can. It sounds pretty good and the op points are close to target values. Target values plate volts 430 vdc plate current 62mA grid volts -51 vdc .......

It works slick as a whistle when you use the right procedure. Now the only problem is deciding where the peaks start to flatten out. It can make quite a bit of difference in the voltage reading. Can y .......

I will only say one more thing.... Take a look at the specs, cost, and construction requirements to build a 800 volt amp vs a 500 volt amp. The caps alone are bad enough. .......

Yes, I was using an 8 ohm resistor across the opt output leads, and no the resistor does not get warm, and yes I realize that voltage is way too high. However; I went ahead and tried your test and got .......

That kind of hum is generally from either the power supply or the filament supply. You need to filter it out of whichever one it is. Unless of course it is a ground loop from another piece of equipmen .......

One of my main reasons for going with this design was to be able to use the 813 at lower voltages. I am not a big fan of high voltage amps. I'm too clumsy. : ) I'd rather stick with the 550v B+. Would .......

I have not been able to find recommended operating points for the triode connected SE 813, so I have been trying different sets to see what might sound best to me. So far my favorite set is B+ 550v .......

Learned a new trick today I guess. I did like you suggested and put a .1uf Russkie cap and 1k grid leak resistor in front to the output tube and a 60k grid stop resistor going to ground from the cap. .......

Decided to try an 845 first as I have a schematic for it as posted. Amazing what a difference that made. I had it up and running in about 20 minutes on the new bread board. Now this is a long ways .......
