Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's got something to do with my problems. My DDDAC is a DIY project, and uses the old 1543 chip, so is a NOS DAC. It uses an I2S buss and reclocks on the DAC with a Tent Labs .......

Like everything in audio it depends on what variant you are talking about, and the application. If you are talking about a 6N1P (non "EV") they aren't so good, however there are several other variants .......

Something very wrong there. The 6n6p has an actual gain of ~ 16, with a 15K:600 transformer it has a 25:1 impedance ratio. The square root of that is a 5 times reduction 16/5 = 3.2 gain, or about 10.1 .......

like others have stated, I believe it is almost certainly a 1/2 amp motor, my Papst motors draw ~ .25 amps at 120-123V (my usual line voltage range). All synchronous hysteresis motors are very ineffic .......

Looks like your transformer is set up for 2.5K, that's awfully low for a 2A3. 2.5K will give you more power than 3.5K but it will have more distortion. Your quads aren't all that efficient, who knows .......

Usually bypassing caps is done if there is a roll off of highs, and the value is significantly lower than you propose (~.1uf). Also the K75-10s have a wonderful mid range, but they do roll off slightl .......

Vinnie, these are what are commonly called KBG caps, KBG is just a western alphabet translation from the Cyrillic alphabet. I use larger values as parafeed caps, they are the best I've found for that .......

The 6n2p-e is slightly different pin out than a 12ax7, just want to make sure the Chinese 6n2 is the same. With the Russian tube, pin 4 and 5 are for the 6.3v heaters, and no provision for a 12.6v hea .......

I have noticed a difference in the 2 caps, one, the thick ones are labeled SSG-3, and the thin one SSG-2. I'm pretty sure there is a difference in construction, just don't see how the kind of construc .......

You call this a preamp (not enough gain for phono), but is really more of a line stage. As others have pointed out, with a cathode bypass cap on the 396A you will net a gain of about 5 out of the OPT. .......

IIRC, @ 25ma, the Cree SiC Schottkys I used, dropped about .875v each, so 2 should give you ~ 1.75v and 3 ~ 2.6v. If you really want to hit that 2.2v bias, you might try using 2 Schottkys and an 18 oh .......

Andy, filament bias certainly works with the 4P1L, that tube is a natural for it. I'm sure the Coleman reg with filament bias is the hot setup for DHTs. However, implementing that on a tube like a 300 .......

My fave resistors are the Takman Rex carbon film. They are not veiled like the Kiwames or the KOA Speers, but not edgy at all. Give them a try, they're relatively inexpensive and sound great to my ear .......

Thanks for the suggestion, but space limitations of the ST-70 chassis, make it hard to use anything other than electrolytics. I'm not a big fan of electrolytics either, I only use them if I positively .......

Thanks Eli, I'll take your suggestions on both the diodes and the thermistor. I have a bunch of the UF4007s in stock, but not familiar with that particular tweak. Are you talking about installing them .......

I have tried diode bias on a CCS parafeed line stage, and am very pleased with the results. Not sure what effect that diode bias has on output impedance with a conventional gain stage. With parafeed, .......

I've been using Russian caps for many years now, big fan of them. IMO their only drawback is their large size. For coupling I use the SSGs (silver/mica), if you need a higher voltage rating the KSGs ( .......

I don't plan on using plate chokes. When I said "active loads and shunt regulation on both stages", I didn't think that plate chokes would be considered active loads. I have plate chokes, but they are .......

Aldovan, very nice! I'm going to try something similar. What kind of power are you getting out of the amp? BTW I have a lot of experience with the 6N6P and love it. I'd suggest putting a CCS as a load .......

I've used both on my bread boarded parafeed line stage, as parafeed caps, so they are directly in the signal path like couplers. They are both some of the best caps I've tried. After a LOT of cap roll .......

I'm a big fan of that tube for a driver, and I have a large collection (~200) of them. It's true what others say about the EV versions being the ones to get, however I've never found a way to accurate .......
