I believe the Elacs are only $229 and will be a hot commodity. But the Zaph SR71 are $359 without cabinets. So add in good cabinets and it'll certainly be more. I'd like to hear both for sure. ::: TOP .......

The 430 is a great little amp. I love it's sound. I used mine with a pair of Spica TC50s. I upgraded the two big power supply caps and the bass became very solid. Enjoy it. .......

It's the budget Shure M97xE. It's so much better than the unlabeled stock cartridge it's ridiculous. I was trying 1.5g. I think they recommend 1.25 up to 1.5g. .......

I like the DynamiCap for preamp decoupling. Reasonable price for such great sounding caps. I use them as the output decouplers in my VAC Standard Pre LE preamp. Their 10uF value would work fine in you .......

I like Vandys. I used some 2Ci's for years. If all you want to do is get something for Christmas while you repair your main amp, a class T or 3886 amp would be fine. You can find some decent new amps .......

I'd look toward a used Krell 300i, Classe CAP151 or even a Cary CAI-1. All are used on Agon right now. The Cary supposed to be a pretty smooth sounding amp from what I gather. .......

I think Plitron is an excellent choice. They make very high quality toroidal transformers. Get a bit higher VA, like their 120VA because they don't have 100VA. More current isn't a bad thing. I'd reco .......

The amps to try have a lot to do with how big your room is and what speakers you are planning on using. Also the type of music and how loud you like it played. And finally budget. Buying used is a gre .......

I had a friend (who is also a licensed electrician), run 4 gauge wire to a subpanel into my listening room. We did 4 (20 amp) circuits to 4 individual outlets (which were nice copper Furutech outlets) .......

If I had you're budget and the VS VR1's, I'd look for a great amp first and CD player second. Meaning IMHO that getting a great integrated to mate with the VR1's will allow one of the many cheaper DVD .......

Move up to the KZ Muse type from Nichicon. The FW is one of their standard audio caps. The KZ is their premium audio cap. It's not that expensive. Only downside might be size. Try Handmade Electronics .......

Manley Stingray would be nice. Bobby mentioned EL34 based amps being quite synergistic. Any Blue Circle, Simaudio, PLinius, Rogue, etc. BTW, the 6 packs are supposed to work very well with the Merlins .......

But you must realize NOS vintage tubes can all be expensive depending on age/rarity. $100 for a nice pair of vintage tubes isn't out of line. There are many other brands that are 2 or 3X that easily. .......

The Sovtek 12AX7LPS is a great recent production tube. I have a quad in my phono stage now. Very low noise and nice body and bloom. I have recently tried the newer Tung Sol 12AX7 and didn't like them .......

I haven't heard the Auricle stuff. But I do have a VAC Preamp and Amp combo and it's definitely synergistic. I think getting both pieces of the same level from the same company is a great way to go. T .......

What you need a small amp. There are tons of DIY kits around for small amps. Look at electronics123.com, 41Hz.com, Twistedpairaudio.com, etc. The 41Hz Amp3 is easy to build and sounds great for a trip .......

IMHO, you could use the toroid in any box you can find. Toroids have a smaller magnetic field footprint than other transformers so interference shouldn't be an issue, especially if it already was insi .......

Reforming may work as a temporary fix, but I wouldn't want to live with such an old cap in a unit I was going to use. It would be much safer to use a new cap....probably sound better as well. Just my .......

Mine sound pretty darn nice. More solid sounding than the standard FE206 (which I had and used for a year). The originals had some drawbacks that the new ones seemed to improve. The new aren't as thin .......

I can't say enough good things about my VAC Standard LE preamp. Lists around $5K, but can be found used for half that or less. Some have remotes and also phonostages. Works great with my many amps, gr .......

I got the MM first then the SuperBAM. Both are well worth doing. The extra hole for the feet is called "the 6th toe mod" (I think). Bobby can do it at the time of the MM mod. Just an extra tapped hole .......

I built an ST35 clone from DIYTube last year and love it. But the EL84's aren't powerhouses. On my 90db efficient Merlins, they play nicely, but often times I'd like more power than the amp can handle .......

Yes, I found it hard to get the channels balanced. The pots are real small and don't have any defining starting/ending points, so your just blindly twisting them. Get a PEC stereo volume pot and you'd .......

It has some cheap pots to adjust each channel. They are separate per channel and on the back, but work. I took mine out and use it as a 2 channel amp. Adding in some sort of quality pot isn't too hard .......

Look on Audiogon for the Epos ES11 for $225 and a Creek 5050 for $350. These are classic components that'll sound great for what you want. Very synergistic. For CD player, start with a simple Toshiba .......

The MQ565's with nickel pin stripping you provided me for my EL84 amp are extremely impressive. Great dynamics for such a tiny amp but also they seem to have impressive detail as well. I am very satis .......

Are all those terms referring to the same tube mode? As opposed to triode/Single ended mode? I used to think they were, but my understanding might need a more fully stated explanation of what the mode .......

You have given me many things to ponder. My last project was the cool little DIYTube's ST35/EL84 kit. Pretty straight forward with much hand holding. Not a ton of decision to make, but it ended up fan .......

I used the 12 gauge mag wire, 4 wires total, two per side, one per signal (meaning one wire for +, one wire for -). I twisted them together best I could. I put spades on one end. Not much to it. ::: T .......

I'd recommend you get the Merlins and try either the Blue Circle NCSC which is at your price point new or perhaps the Manley Stingray. Plinius and Simaudio might also be on my list. Bobby at Merlin is .......
