Thanks for asking...They are all scratch built. They are all 2 stage SET amps except the one on the left with the cage....That's a scratch version of an ST-70. The one on the left with the wood panels .......

To a great extent in some cases. Capacitors are only neccessary in signal path designs that are "designed" around them. I've built direct coupled SET amps that have no cpacitors in the signal path at .......

not sure I get you? The Thermistor on the primary would (help to) mitigate the increased inrush to the larger capacitance... The circuits current draw doesn't increase because of the bigger "reservoir .......

wow,...those CREE diodes look good. I don't see why a quad of the 600V/6A T220's won't work.... The SS-5's are only rectifying -+50VAC for the output section...and I can't imagine the current load bei .......

Yup, those are the part numbers (see pic) there are some other numbers on the side of each of the parts. SS-5 and *SS-5R *(meaning reverse?) make up the two halves of a rectifier bridge. Each part ha .......

When I hear that type of sound from tubes its usually due to microphonics...which in good measure adds a pleasant, euphonic sound... speaker vibration back to the chassis and voila.. I did a 2 stage b .......

Pioneer HPM-100's (they are the MK-I version) in 7/10 condition for $180pr...cabs are in very good shape 'cept the bottoms. The bottoms have light scratches from clearly being moved around on an abras .......

Because in a transformer induced voltage is proportional to the total "flux-linkage" and the frequency. Higher frequencies (like 60hz), require a smaller cross-sectional area in the core,...the smalle .......

Par-Metal makes nice chassis... Tapping the holes for the PCB standoffs/output devices was an experience (tapping fluid? who knew!)...I used a 6/32 drill and M3 tap for them. This really was fun to .......

The jack for the right side was not isolated properly from the chassis... So when I properly grounded the input to the PCB, and connected source to it.... I was shorting the channel... Massive heat si .......

Agreed..Pics are tough to decipher... On the R channel, the WHT wire from the GND terminal on the right PCB is on the ground pin of the input RCA jack. Red is hot. On the L channel, the RED wire from .......

I owned a Sonic Frontiers Line 2 preamp that used a Cirrus Logic digital volume chip per channel. Its a well regarded preamp (tube based), and to my knowledge didn't use OPamps in any of the gain stag .......

Neff, on that same note. I'm building a 6BQ5 stereo SET. The Edcor OPTs are small 10W/5K jobs with screen taps. Have you experienced any difference using the OPT screen tap vs a resistor? .......

Trouble-shooting a tube amp can be a pain in the rump, without the proper tools... TUBES- being the most volatile part of the tube amp,...I always start with them... .......

There is a workaround that I read about in TUBECAD, which is: "to place a zener in parallel with the cathode resistor. The zener’s break voltage is purposely set higher than the bias voltage, so that .......

Thanks for that info. The driver is actually 6E6P... This tube is rated for 10,000 hrs at normal use... Same curves as 6E6P just a longer life version.. Slo .......

I made some adjustments to use a higher voltage supply on the final tube plate...keeping dissipation at 30W on the final...the tube should only "see" about 270v from plate to cathode... .......

I've always seen it with a 100R between the G2 and plate...but if you are at/under the max voltage for G2 you should be able to tie it right to the plate no? .......

To be blunt: No. The C3m/C3g alone just doesn't have the output voltage to fully drive/swing the grid of that tube... Thats why I posted the grid curves. :o) .......

Bypassing the screen grid with a capacitor was supposed to make the screen voltage more constant with respect to the cathode. I was ignorant to any adverse effects by doing so....thanks for that. Dan .......

Best I've built/heard was a Shishido Direct Coupled SET w/ 2A3...using the "controversial (to say the least)" L.S.E.S. B+ filter...ripple was an issue (hum), but it had dynamics/speed like I've never .......

Yes, this tube really requires a lot of juice!... from the filament to the bias.... its just hungry for current... I'm going to need a PT rated at least 450ma to feel good about the B+ supply... Ev .......

I can vouch for that. My last amp was just that, 2 stages..using a Siemens D3a IT coupled to an EH300B Gold grid, IT is a Hammond 126, and all I can say is ...wowzers. .......

Yep, there was a big stink about them failing on motherboards back in the 80's....they are cheap in price and quality. I agree its discouraging to see them in an amp of that cost, they could have used .......

I didn't say it was new...but you'd have to think he designed this amp to voice a certian way,...that takes trial and error. Just using math isn't going cut it on its own,...you have to listen and eva .......

I only use those for octal rectifiers...and I've have decent luck with using them for that, ...but my signal tubes usually get teflon CMC's...some people don't like them (the CMC's) but they grab the .......

I've actually done that before...didn't really like it... I broke the machine bolt because I tightened it too hard trying to get an uber contact between all the lugs... I ended up fabricating somethin .......

They are regulated DC supplies with a soft-start feature. Each board has two (2) individual regulated supplies, and each can provide up to 1.5A of current. The filament voltage for each is adjustable .......

I've been playing with supplies based on what I have on hand... 21mV on the final and 283uV on the driver ain't bad... I get a lot of ringing/overshoot on C2 during startup though... .......

In pentode mode was I wrong to subtract the screen grid current from the cathode current? With the values suggested by Thorsten (and by my sloppy calculations) the plate dissipation should only be aro .......

...a tube amp is the wrong tool for the job. The stress that type of music (sub-sonic bass) has on a solid state amp is tremendous, let alone a tube amp, which will bottom out well before the music.. .......

I don't agree with that... The Z of the OPT's is a bit low but adquate for a variety of PP designs such as 2A3, 6A3, 6AQ5, 6B4G, 6L6, 6V6,...it depends on the distortion vs power output you are trying .......

all of the pins are electrically isolated from the base...which in the case of the C3x's is only used to orient the pins...not sure about other Loktals... .......

the key pin appears to be the control grid... good grounding & wiring practices prevail... Besides Yamamoto san (amongst many others) remove the shell with dead quiet results... .......

The cap returns directly to the cathode, above the cathode resistor, a parafeed cap would return to ground in that position, or between the plate and transformer primary wouldn't it...? ::: TOP .......

That SonicCap is only rated at 200VDC... I thought it was rated at 600VDC but thats only the lower value GenI caps.... I replaced it with a 20uf/370VAC Oil Run.... :o) .......

The issue wasn't actually with the cap being bad/shorted, the cap wasn't oriented properly (Doh!).... The negative side of the lytic should have gone to the cathode, not the IT...(thanks for pointing .......

Voltages look good to me....but am I running the driver too hard? I changed out the 8K for a 5K to put more VDC on the CCS...I was falling short before...now there is 320VDC on the CCS.... I measured .......

I did what you said and the plate voltage on the driver shot up to an uncomfortable level....about 400VDC... I turned off the amp, discharged all caps, and then soldered in a 1uf/600V russian PIO...I .......

You're dropping 145VDC across the source pin R on the CCS, so you'll be dissing about what?.... 5.1 Watts...? ...to be safe you'll need a 10W R before the CCS to ease some of the dissipation burden of .......

Why wouldn't you have assumed otherwise? Its a pentode and has 3 grids right? G1 is the input, and G2 is normally connected to the plate, G3 is "normally" connnected to the cathode... ...but can't you .......

I gotcha...but any schematic is simply a "variation" of some standard topology, IE: cathode bias, and standard preamp topologies (SRPP, LTP, etc...)...with or without feedback somewhere in the design. .......

Hi Tre', I would think that most of you guys chose input tubes with a certian level of flexibility in mind,....designing an input stage that can be "met in the middle" by either a CD player or a pream .......

It sounds like what you are saying is that low Mu triodes have an inherently better ability to swing the grid of an output stage than say a Med/Hi Mu triode, but why? Is it a design "compromise" IE: y .......

Its helped me understand how to better make a choice of input driver... I like preamps too. I have a DIY Grounded Grid , but my fav is a MINT Onkyo P-304 that I use all the time. With that being said, .......

I think I am being misunderstood... I see a lot of spec abbreviations that I am not familiar with like: Rp = Plate Resistance Vp = Plate Voltage Mu = Amp factor Rk = Cathode Resistor and the list goes .......

Probably for the B+ ?.....those input drivers would need to be DC heated for low noise, along with the 300B's....For a head amp its got to hum like a bored security guard...especially if all the filam .......

Svetlana stopped making them a while ago, yes. But like most NOS, there seems to be an ample supply! Boiaudioworks.com has had them for sale (and still does) if worst comes to worse I can buy another .......

I found 2 of these tubes in my cabinet tucked away, purchased about 3 yrs ago. I wanted to build a 2 stage amp using these as the finals, but the heater voltage/current requriements kept me from it .......

I ran my amp for about 4 hours and the (1st transistor getting the full 400VDC B+) heatsink was just warm...I am runing it at 200VDC/20ma on the D3a plate... .......
