This is how I run my ESL's., full range with a pair of Janis W1 set at 40Hz and below. With the clamping circuit from Ken at EStat I have no fear in playing at high levels .......

When I want to rock I use full system Maggy llla's and a pair of 15inch slot loaded sub that are flat to well below 20. But the delicacies of the Quads are very nice. .......

Quads do go lower than 100hz I use them flat on the floor no legs and tilted back slightly near field listening I do not feel the need to use the subs .......

I rebuilt llla's five years ago, new hardwood frames and external xover a la Peter Gunn and never had a fuse in the system. I can play at 100db with no problem .......

The wooden frames are my design. PG gave me the confidence and helped with rewiring the panels. AndyR gave me the crossover design, but I am now thinking of using PG's series xover for the IIIa's ::: .......

The Amps are 8 yrs old. Antique Sound Labs Monsoon. Four KT88's each and about 100 watts a side. They weigh 45lbs each. The Maggy IIIa's were purchased used about 4 years ago and went through a comple .......

I certainly would go to the trouble of pulling the sock and see how bad it is. It might just be a couple of wires loose and a few miniutes with DAP will fix the problem. I know taking off the socks is .......

I rebuilt these IIIa's about four years ago. The wood is paduk. Just a simple door frame with rabbits for the frame to fit into, not that hard to do, I used pocket screws and glue for the joinery. .......

this is a tough call. If you coat the mid wires with clearcoat you may save it. but you are adding mass to the system plus the unknown on how long it will last.. Rewire it all and your good to go for .......

before adding any more mass to the mylar I would try in a corner where no wire is and just lightly wipe with acetone and let dry overnight to see if the tackiness goes away .......

After you get the old wires off then the fun begins. Don't forget to take photos or make good drawings before you take the wires off. What I did I used DAP contact cement to tack each end of the loops .......

I have rewires a few panels and can say the mylar is surprisingly tough against anything but a sharp point. getting ti old wires of is the hard tedious part. Lots of acetone and cotton balls. you need .......

Funny you should mention the TAD60. I run KT88's. First off I usually keep the feedback to the minimum. I only fool with it when playing harsh recordings. I have been modifying the TAD quite a bit. .......

If you are talking about the input pot I use that. Most of the time it is all the way up (zero ohms) but there are times I do turn it down based on recordings. This amp is used for driving the mids an .......

sorry I threw them out, just a little plastic pad with two terminals. One side was a small screw for attaching the aluminum wire and the other side was for the slide on connector .......

I would do the simplest repair now with the aluminum tape and wait for the next break. The breaks usually come from moisture getting to the aluminum wire corroding it until it breaks. Carefully inspec .......

I use a kt88 pp amp for the mids and ribbon and a class D for the bass panel quite effectively. a lot cheaper than going mega buck high power tube amp. The kt88 does fine at moderate levels since I al .......

I agree with (as usual)Andy. The sound of my system got so much cleaner when I cut the Maggy IIIa's off at 50hz and brought my subs in at 45Hz. I can play much louder too with out mylar slap. ::: TOPI .......

Yes one at a time. Slow and tedious. I use put a dot of DAP on the Mylar at the starting point, then a little on the wire (with a long tale for connection. Let the DAP set, press in place, then run it .......

when I rewired my mids the first time I followed Maggy's instruction and used the 3M Super 77 to glue the wires down, followed by a coat of N20. I did not like the build up of the Super 77 so I remove .......

I have two buttons on each panel. the old wires go under the buttons. I could leave this and just rewire around them. Removing them dies look scary because I am pretty sure they are glued as well as r .......

I set my maggys low point at 55hz and my subs come on at around 50hz. otherwise I get a 10db bass bump at around 50hz. This allows two things. For the few times I want to play loud I can with out any .......

I would use a mild and very dilute soap/water solution and very gently wipe the residue off. The mylar is pretty tough and can be handeled, just keep sharp implements far away. When I rebuilt my maggy .......

The mylar is stretched and glued between a sandwich of the metal frame. This something for the factory to do. re-gluing the wires is simple compared to working with the mylar. .......

If there is delam and the mylar is intact then offer a low ball price. Take a close look at the ribbons and see if its still tight and not stretched between the glue supports. Replacement ribbons cost .......

If yours is sticky and soft you ac read back through the archives and there is a Krylon product (Clearkote, I beleive) you can spray a thin coat to stabilize the glue. When I I rebuilt my maggy IIIa's .......

When I called to get my ribbon replacements and gave then the old 3ohm serial number I was told I would get the 2ohm ribbon with a resistor. The ribbons came in three days and indeed they are the 2ohm .......

Check out Cardas web site they have a speaker room calculator. there are two versions one for boxes and one for dipole. worked for me as a starting place, no help with toe-in, that's just a trial and .......

I would remove the ribbon before removing the staples. From experience I had a very tense time removing a lost staple from inside a ribbon. .......

you can get 1.5 ohm mundorf from madisound for a couple of bucks they are 10 watts you could parallel two 3 ohms for more wattage but 10 is probably enough .......

On my IIIa's I bi-amp and I get mylar slam (at 100db's on rat shack meter) way before either amps approaches clipping so i feel quite comfortable removing the fuses. .......

I heartily agree that one does not need mega-watts for Mags (to qualify I have only used MagIIIa'a). I bi-amp with 150watts SS on the bass panels and 50watts glass on mids and ribbons using replacemen .......

If you have a DVM just measure the the ribbon to see if its around 2 ohms You probably need to remove one conductor so you are not measuring the xover. If its 2 ohms and the ribbon looks good I doubt .......

for my room measurements I use the Behringer Mic into a M-Audio unit that is a mic preamp and ADC with USb out to a laptop with TrueRTA. I should be able to connect the Piezo device instead of the mic .......

I used 3 inch for top stile and bass side rail. 6 inch for bottom stile and ribbon side rail. The wood was milled down to 7/8th thickness. Cost was $145 with a set of poplar pieces to practice on. I d .......

I talked with Maggy and they cannot use Aluminum solder any more so they have gone to screw terminals which sounds like a great idea but... there is corrosion problem between aluminum and certain meta .......

thanks on my stand alone ribbons I used the 1/4-20 inserts for the right angle brackets to hold the driver to the base both of which was 3/4 inch thick and the inserts were 1/2 inch long. On my final .......

Used 20mhz dual trace scopes are dirt cheap, more that you need for analog $35-$50 on ebay or better at local hamfest, where I got mine for $10 a few years ago and still using. I downloaded oscope tut .......

I use the digital out to an external DAC also. I would read the threads over at slimdevices forum about mods to the duet. Some agree the replacing the stock switching wall wart is a plus just for gett .......

fmak has the right idea, simple linear ps are pretty simple to build. I think $300 plus is way too much for SqueezBox especially if you are using the digital out. Check out slimdevices squeezebox foru .......

I use realRTA which the basic program is free, but cost if you want better resolution. That and the Behringer ECM-8000 mic and a usb pramp from M-Audio make for a very good kit with a laptop So it goe .......

Yes the duet is a great device. One can improve sound quality by replacing the wall wart with a decent 12vdc power supply. Plenty available online or build one. I will be trying a battery supply soon .......

I agree that most of the problem was component mismatch. All the hardware in your system is bright sounding and I do not think the subtle changes one gets with power cables, interconnects,and speaker .......

I noticed the WMA file generated with J-River of the same song was quite a bit smaller than a EAC-FLAC file. Less than half. EAC-FLAC took over 20mins to rip while while J-River was a few mins even us .......

I made the switch to vista also. What are you using to rip with. do you feel the need to use EAC with FLAC this takes about 20mins per disk to get it ripped. is this worth the time So it goes......... .......

I applaud you in thinking of others, other than yourself especially in common areas. Even though i have a dedicated sound room, its in "our" house and I include my wife in a lot of what i do in there. .......

Thanks for the response I have a preamp with 12db of gain and its too much. It uses 3 12au7's. I do not want to pad the input(nasty resistors in signal path) and was looking to lower the gain. It uses .......

I would buy the kit new. You can get a second PS board for $50 to go completely dual mono, and upgrade various bits and pieces as you go. Very simple kit, just a bit tedious. I love mine, very quiet, .......
