I suspect that the phono stage was a calculated design decision specifically for MM cartridges...well actually, it was designed for a step-up transformer to be used if you want to use an MC catridge. .......

It seems quite popular for audiophiles to have a SS power amp for firmer control of bass and maybe a few other benefits, and to have a tubed pre-amp for a more rounded out organic feel to their sound. .......
