Yes, they are worth the extra.....if you believe in cryo treatment of tubes. The GE 6550 has good bass but the SED has better midrange, IMHO. .......

Godzilla - Thanks for your input. Jason at Lovecraft explained that the Super Abbey uses the 'nearfield' driver which has better bass, and makes up for the loss of treble with the rear-facing tweeter. .......

I replaced the coupling caps in my VK150SE amps with V-CAP TFTF caps. Huge improvement. Highly recommended. Each amp has (4) .22uf/630V coupling caps. Your amp probably has a different value for those .......

The left side 12AX7's (V4 & V5) are the phono section tubes. The 12AT7's are the driver tubes and affect the sound the most if you're not using the phono section. Check the McIntosh section of AudioKa .......

I had a 6900 and had to deal with the bulbs burning out. It's a royal PITA to change those bulbs. Not only are they difficult to get at, you ( if you have some soldering skills) have to do some solder .......

Not sure about similarities in motors, but I had the exact same symptoms with a VPI Scout when they first came out. It was intermittent just as you state. Not sure what happened as I sold the table. .......
