you guys are soooo not thinking outside the box... I have a pretty regular case, 80mm noisy fans, etc - but I just put the darn thing in the basement, remote KVM to the listening room via 50 foot Cat5 .......

the USB receiver takes 32 bits, and it's the USB receiver that feeds the DAC an I2S signal that is already volume-controlled. .......

Rega Planet isn't even close to the ancient 8 chip DDDAC design. A well built 24 or higher chip count MK2 DDDAC will outperform $2500 DACs. Peter .......

you should read up on "bit padding" and then make up your mind about the digital volume control. Plenty of bits available to volume control a 16bit audio file once it's padded to 32. but again - I gu .......

an electrolytic 0.1 bypass on cheap caps is not gonna be very effective. Get rid of the Elnas and put a few 1000uF GB N series caps in there, maybe an Auricap on top of each. That's quiet. Everything .......

doesn't hurt the DAC at all if you switch batteries on the fly - most you'll get is a big pop in the speakers :) caps will be ok for that, but they better be high quality, otherwise you're introducing .......

the capacitors are Blackgates, the resistors around the regulator are stock. Capacitors should not affect the voltages, resistors do. I did measure the resistors and they come in close to what the sch .......

following the release of the 750GB mechanisms, a lot of the smaller drives are being cleared out. I bought a 400GB for 177 just 2 months ago. Probably bad timing, since I still have 200GB free on that .......

what are you doing for volume control? The key difference is found at the lower volume settings. If you feed some preamp with the signal and have the DAC at 100% all the time, you won't hear a differe .......

well, the USB interface may accept really high sample rates, but the TDA1543s don't really run at that level, but the more important part is that to make it work without Kmixer (ASIO4All) you have to .......

Don't quite follow you here - how can you connect it to the PC without power on the Firewire bus on the PC? Firewire ports have to provide some power for devices, which is why your Belkin card has tha .......

got mine from Germany in a batch with DDDAC parts. There are vendors who have thousands of those, but you need to buy a large minimum. I don't think there are any sources in the US that'll sell you a .......

yes, I'm running direct USB-I2S now, in a DAC that can actually do both, SPDIF in and USB in, which allowed me to A/B the two methods. The SPDIF part of that DAC was a complete rebuild of the old DDDA .......

I use the Cardas formula - woofer center of each speaker about 0.23x room width from each outside wall. Works very well, and in my room that leaves barely 6 feet between the inside edges of the speake .......

just software - the player you use on the PC needs to have that capability. The type of card you use is pretty independent from that, especially if you use the regular volume control and Windows sound .......

The speak-on connectors are much more robust and there's never an exposed contact. Plus, if you use the 8-pole, you got ONE connector doing all the work. You can use plenty fat wires in these things. .......

For me using an SLA battery and custom 5V supply is the way to go. The issue is not necessarily the DC power coming out of the unit to feed the USB hub, but the crud that is spewing from the cheapo AC .......

you are correct, however, that's what "bit padding" is for - foobar will "pad" your 16 bit file to a 32 bit before it attenuates it. Gives you plenty of attenuation by dropping bits before it gets int .......

yeah, this whole "bit perfect" talk has me chucle every time I see it. The thing is - just about EVERY DAC chip has a pretty significant error rate - we're talking maybe 14 bit accurate on a good chip .......

you really don't need a preamp at all. Obvious, that "all digital" means in my book no CD transport either. Those are basically optical turntables. If you use a computer as a source, with proper USB .......

you can have two Tent clocks in that DAC - one for the SPDIF receiver board to reclock data from a CD transport, and a second clock on the USB board, which does not reclock the I2S out, but rather set .......

The only "proper" method to connect SPDIF is to ditch RCA connectors and convert bot ends to BNC. SPDIF is designed for 75 ohm wires and connectors. RCA does not qualify, no matter how expensive the .......

not sure about what AH is. The Dac you're talking about ($180 on ebay?) can probably be tweaked quite a bit with some basic soldering, but if you can do that, you can build as well. What's your budget .......

proper 75 ohm SPDIF cables are a) BNC on both ends (the RCA stuff is an abberation and not to spec), and b) you usually crimp the connectors to the proper coax cable. There are very few 75 ohm connect .......

this is all about ground loops. depending on your house wiring and your computer power supply, you may find that some USB DAC and power amp combos will generate a ton of hum. I had that issue, the cab .......

have you looked at your amplifier? The only reason there's a blown fuse is usually that there's a square wave coming to the tweeter, and that happens when the amp is clipping. Some crossover mods may .......

there is a difference if the CD is scratched. I also saw frequent errors about 11 seconds into each CD when messing around with burst mode. Ripping still goes at about 10-12X in secure mode on a good .......

check into www.gruberpower.com for longer playing SLA batteries that are cheaper than the Optimas. Optima batteries have great "cold cranking power" for car starters, but I doubt you need that for you .......

I used the original in the burner - ripped it to pieces... Unless you know that your CD-R won't spin up at max speed before then dropping back down to 4X or whatever you actually selected, it probably .......

I agree that there's some diffusion factor on any foam panel, but the core function of a foam panel will be absorbtion, and especially thin foam will affect your mids and highs, exactly what you want .......

In terms of transformers- 1000VA per channel is total overkill. The idea is to have enough in the PSU to hook up another module. A single 1000VA is much cheaper than two 500VA. Remember that these .......

I use warm water for the wash, then blow the water off the business side of the CD, lay it with the label side on a towel and let the air do the rest. Spotless. Peter .......

I'd use a text editor (cue sheets are text files); look at them and you can pretty much determine what you need to do. You also probably have to merge the large WAV files of both rips into one file. N .......

PC transports generally outperform CD spinners. Problem is to get the audio signal out cleanly, and a USB to DAC interface that's not powered by the computer can get you lower jitter than most CD tran .......

that's what I was thinking - there's a lot more buffering and error correction happening in DVD playback than in redbook CD playback. The fact that the audio files are completely separate from the MPE .......

not sure if the exact software you need is out there, but there's a ton of DVD to PC tools, although most are designed to dupe movies to DVD-R or Divx or whatever. DVDx can create DV-encoded files fro .......

I have a mute switch in my Foreplay, never power down my Odyussey Mono Extremes. No pops. procedure: switch mute on switch power on wait till tubes glow, and another 10 sec just for good measure switc .......

I can highly recommend the Belden/Canare BNC/BNC cables sold by bluejeanscables.com - you can't build them yourself any cheaper unless you already have the expensive crimping tool needed. Not much to .......
