I did try popping 2 of them in, i didn't see how it could hurt. Just wondered how much the CF affected the sound and if it would make sense to buy a 4th Amperex when only used in the CF. .......

I have a preamp (AR LS7) that uses 4 6922's. The front 2 are for the L and R channel gain. The back 2 are for the cathode follower L and R. How necessary is it to use the same brand tubes for both the .......

Does anyone happen to know what the metal in this banana plug is made of? I used some Deoxit 5 on it and the Q-Tip got quite dark but some black still remains. Any help is appreciated. ::: TOPIC:: .......

Good questions. I have a couple of systems and this unit/system will only be played occasionally and never at high volumes. On of my criteria for choosing pieces is they have to sound good a low volum .......

As I mentioned to FenderLover, It is a Mallory. It has not leaked any more and the unit sounds good. This unit came from a friend and he can repair it if needed. Problem is, this unit is in "like new" .......

Found a small puddle of oil(?) on the bottom cover of my Scott 340a tube receiver when I removed it. Maybe dime to quarter in size and right under one of the electrolytic caps. It hasn't leaked any mo .......

I have 2 pairs of these labeled Raytheon that I use in a Marantz 8b. All test great. The long plates sound better to me and I know that's all that counts but I was wondering if there is a general cons .......

"Sounds like "leave it on" is the way to go." IMO, if you listen to it every day then I'd turn it on in the morning and then off before you go to bed. .......

My tube preamp started acting up in the left channel. I tested the tubes (CJ ART, 5 6922's per channel) and one of the 6922's showed grid emission "reject" immediately on the meter. Replaced that tube .......

I figured the SET would be the "worst case scenario" but I listen to smooth jazz quite a bit and the Foci sounded really nice with 8 watts of 300b. Absolutely no strain in the music and all that magic .......

True, if 80 was average. If 80 is peak then average may be 60 or 70 and the quieter passages maybe 50 or less which would only require a small fraction of 1 watt. .......

I did do a search and found black flashing to be okay, in fact normal in some tubes like Mullards but in those cases, they came that way. I installed a new set of EH6922's in my preamp about 6 months .......

Some people buy equipment as a way to listen to music and at the other end of the spectrum people buy music to listen to their equipment. I think the vast majority is weighted to one side or the other .......

don't run the tubes 24/7 in an OCD effort to speed up the process. do run them for a few hours (3-5), turn the amp off/let the tubes cool for an hour or so, turn back on for a few hours. aka, rinses/l .......

Normally I wouldn't recommend an SET amp for 84db speakers...but...if the impedance of your speaker is fairly flat, hopefully close to 8 ohm, and you don't play your music very loud, I used an Art Aud .......

2 years ago I bought a Scott 399. It's a stereo Integrated with a mono FM tuner inside. I did use it with it's matching 335 mpx decoder for awhile but started having trouble with the mpx. A better dec .......

Specs on mine indicate fwiw, my other CJ preamp is the ACT 2.2 which uses 2-6h30's per side and it's output impedance specs are the same as the ART's. Neither use a cathode follower. .......

Congrats on satisfying that itch. A 300b SET is one of my favorite amps also. For a tube recommendation, I'd say EML would be a good bet (but not their mesh plate in your specific case). .......

The simple way would be those AudioEngine powered speakers. I have the A5+'s and think they sound pretty good and this is coming from an SET owner/lover. The A2's are less expensive but bet they sound .......

I like the iPad. The headphone out is actually pretty good (for what it is) when using a mini/rca cable into a system. A little better is using a dock with a line out. You now bypass the volume contro .......

I find the 2a3 to do the extremes better (especially the highs) and the 300b to have that delicious midrange. Your chosen speakers will have a great influence over what you hear though. .......

I have a couple tuners with scopes (Marantz 10b, 20b, SAE Mark VI). Each tuner has it's own 300 ohm folded dipole and the stations I listen to are close by. With this many antennas, I hang all of them .......

Pulled it in/out a few times. At first no noise when wiggled then a little but no loss of left channel. I did this while it was still in it's wood case so I had to be agile. It's working fine now but .......

My 3.6's have been in a room that is 10' tall with a 48" ceiling fan for 12 yrs. Distance from the center of the fan to the ribbons is 7'...never had a problem. Tip: If your fan has a reverse switch .......

I've been enjoying my Cary 805 monos a lot lately. They came shipped with the basic Chinese 845 and 211 tubes. I like both types but have a preference for the 211. So for an upgrade from the stock $75 .......

I finally got a tester that tests 300b's and 2a3's as well as 6922. My B & K 650 does not test those outputs but does do the 6922's. When/if I am comfortable with my new Hickok, I may put the B & K up .......

I have a 399 receiver that will be coming to me shortly. A tech friend who is going thru it has offered me a choice for sets of the 7189 output tubes. I don't know details like "black plates" or types .......

Agree with msa. I bought one of those Glow Amp Ones (SEP el84). Jim McShane recommended the 5670's and that's who I bought them from. The Glow had a good sound before and better now. .......

that when an amp is rated at ??? watts that it is being tested into a "resistor". A scope will show X amount into an 8 ohm resistor. Maybe there are more specs into a 4 or even 2 ohm resistor. That's .......

I'm far from an expert on rectifiers so, fwiw, have you checked out the specs on a CV378? 5v with a current draw close to the 5u4 maybe the same. One tech told me they had a voltage drop of 37 vs 44 f .......

Congrats on your 3.6's. I love mine. I have my x/o's off the frame and attached with 12" of the same wire my speaker cables are made of. For you, I'd recommend using some "thin" copper wire, maybe 16 .......

One of my 300b amps uses the 6n1p as a driver for the 300b. I like the tube. Think it sounds a little like the 6922 types and are more robust. I found that the NOS's with the "rocket logo" made a nice .......

I had one of those. I seem to remember biasing the 45 on that amp at around 36. I ran the 2a3's between 55 and 60. Mine was the digital readout version also. I had no problem biasing nos Tung-Sol 45's .......

I'll add, imo: Transistors are not very linear but "negative feedback" is a way to make them spec better, and we all know specs sell :). Bigger amps use more transistors and that means more nfb. Prob .......

I put them at the top of all the ones I've heard with the 19 being my favorite. Either one has a great tuner in them (20 and 20b). I haven't heard the 6060 but I'm not surprised it beats the 2216 alth .......

I use the Cary 805 AE's to drive my 3.6's occasionally. The 805 has been made for almost 20 yrs, you should be able to find one within your budget. Try and find one that uses a 300b to drive the 845. .......

You want the tweeters about 1" to 2" farther from your ears than the mid/woofer panel. I think that will require them intersecting in front of you but "measure". Tweak them 1/2" closer and farther, se .......

Something to consider but at least be aware of: Let's say the x/o point is 2K on a two way speaker. So you use a ss amp for the mid/woofer and a tube amp for the tweeter. Sounds like it could be a goo .......

Your MBP's headphone jack is also an optical out. You put a mini adapter (couple of bucks) on the end of the optical cable that goes into the headphone jack and now you have a digital stream going str .......

I owned the Duetta Sig, 3.6, and 1.6 at the same time. The 3.6 would be the closest to the D. I think it's mainly due to the 3.6's true ribbon and size of the bass panel. The 20.1's would be even clos .......

One more on the insanity list. A Marantz 7c sold "there" for 12000 last summer. It was very nice and in great "original" shape but it was NOT one of those "new/never opened still sealed in it's origin .......

I think I can relate. For my Magnepan 3.6's, I use Cary 805 AE tube monos or Pass XA100.5 ss monos. The Cary (SET 845 or 211) gives me that "tone" thing and all the other goodies that comes with SET's .......

I was able to "wrestle" my wifes Macbook for a comparison. Between the iTouch/Dock/DAC via coax (silver/teflon) at 128 and the Macbook Pro/Toslink/DAC at 192....I liked the former more, a little more .......
