I had this same woofer oscillation when I tried a grado platinum, with the big wooden body. Too much weight for my low-mass SME arm. Could actually see the headshell wiggle along with the woofer pumpi .......

For accurate sound and rugged longevity, my faves are telefunken 12au7s (ECC82 or if you can get them ECC802). Very little coloration, flat response through the spectrum, and last forever. Mullards or .......

Hi. In my experience, it depends on the type of tubes. Pre tubes, such as 12AX7s, need about 30 hours to start "blooming" in the beginning, and another 20 or so to fully open up. Most NOS or new-issue .......

Thanks Johnie! It is in good, not great shape. I think the motor needs oil/cleaning, and yes the plint is plywood...a heavy wood, drak and rounded would be very nice. The arm seems in reasonable shape .......

Distortion like this could be an old tube, but often in vintage stuff, it can also be a cap or a resistor. I would have a techie check it over thoroughly with scope, just so you can isolate the issue. .......

I have restored a Motorola "Golden-Voice" amp, pre and Jensen drivers. It uses 2 12ax7s for the pre and front end of the amp. The amp is actually three amps (a tramp??): two SE el84s for the mid/highs .......

It's really all about what your ears like. Many people feel that the Amperex Bugle Boy 12-volt tubes are a "holy grail". I personally do not like them...they sound blubbery to me in the bottom end in .......

I use PartExpress 12 dB in-line att's between my pre and amp. Pre is pretty high gain, and amp is very powerful. For me, they really worked, bringing the volume pots up to around 11:00 for normal-loud .......

The tele is a high grade 12AT7, I think. Generally the west german or british numbering is 12AT7 = ECC81 12AU7 = ECC82 12AX7 = ECC83 But there are some tele's that are 801S, 802S, 803S, respectively. .......

what cartridge are you using? I had this issue with a Grado Platinum because my arm was not beefy enough. The weight of the cartridge was causing it to wiggle in the groove. Switched to an Audio-Techn .......

I used 2% silver solder from PartsExpress, and I really like it. It is very thin, so you really have to decide, almost, to over-solder, and while the mp is a bit above the usual 60/40, it was perfect .......

The larger ones labeled HA and +105 deg-C are the upgrade. The smaller ones, labeled "UP" and 85 deg-C, are the stock ones supplied with the FP kit. Glad I don't have to fire up the iron for this one! .......

Ya, slowly down was definitely in order. I took everything out of B9 and the LHS of volume channel, desoldered, cleaned, sanded down new exposure on the wire ends, resoldered everything, and the B9/A9 .......

I do have access to liquid nitrogen, but as I understand it, it requires somehow lowering the temp to N2(l) temps very slowly, which requires sophisticated equipment. Anyone know if a lowly chemistry .......

And there is no comparison. LP is vastly superior. For imaging, check out the Hall of Glass. Far more placement and definition on LP, IMHO. Vollenweider has always been big on 3-D imaging on his stuf .......

Before the attenuators, I had a significant crosstalk problem between the tuner and other sources, to the point of getting in the habit of turning the tuner off when I wanted to listen to phono or CDs .......
