The Hypex looks a bit more convenient for a 3 way and more power, but thanks I'll look into it especially since a friend I trust seems to think Mini DSP does digital better. .......

No one cared about imaging in mono days. Even in stereo days it took a while until imaging was well understood. There was no reason to learn before stereo. .......

MDF is the classic speaker cabinet material. I bet over 90% of speakers use it. There are better construction materials and methods but they are more complex and cost more. For a simple, small speaker .......

doubling of power 8 to 4 ohms is just a good rule of thumb. Maggies are current hungry and the doubling tells you the amps has a power supply that is less likely to run out of current under heavy load .......

Decca records was bragging about 30 db dynamic range way back in the 60s and things are way better now. Recordings with wide dynamic range are rare but they exist. I have a Carmina Burrana live record .......

The problem isn't average loudness. A few watts will drive an 85dB speaker loud on average. It's the sudden short musical peaks for one thing since some of them can be 30 dB(depends on your kind of mu .......

I assume you are using multiples. The SEAS paper nextel 4 1/2" W12CY003 is a beautiful driver(check the SEAS web site for curves). But it is costly and the Troels Gravesen modified version is even nic .......

Transient wise lower Q is always more accurate for both closed box and reflex. The price may be leaner bass balance. But closed box always is ultimately better damped in the bass and thus always more .......

The Shure works on a wide range of arms if you use the damping brush which reduces the affect of resonance at a bad frequency. And it's a good cartridge used properly with octave to octave balance mor .......

I believe over sampling is reading the same material multiple times(4 times over sampling means each data point is read 4 times). Up sampling uses an algorithm to create extra data points in between t .......

Playing at low levels can kill the sound especially if the system is not dynamic and compresses. Plus there is the Fletcher/Munson affect. At low levels our ears lose sensitivity at frequency extremes .......

Wave guide is relatively new. The last real BBC speakers(designed by the BBC) came out in the 1980s(LS5/8 & LS5/9) except for the LS5/12 which was designed by a then depleted BBC development departmen .......

normally the simplest crossovers are 1st order which are almost never used because modern drivers are not flat. The main exception was Thiel which ended up with a terribly complex crossover even thoug .......

Actually Bud wasn't too hot for jazz or rock. There was only classical music of which opera was the greatest, of which Wagner and the Ring operas were the ultimate. He didn't really like folk either .......

All things being equal, the faster the roll off, the greater the overhang. Of course even a second order box can sound boomy if it is designed with a high Q, a famous example being the LS3/5A. I suppo .......

I'm curious. Why 6th order? The higher the roll off order the worse the bass control and the overhang of bas tones. .......

I don't know if it does any good but just removing the stylus assembly will not always work since some cartridges like the old ADC pickups used induced magnetism. The magnet is in the pickup body and .......

I googled phase shift bass loading and found a JSE blurb showing a transfer function(frequency curve) for it. Given what I've been taught by real speaker designers the graph worries me in it's bass tr .......

I recall hearing long ago in a John Dahlquist lecture that extreme cold can also weaken the magnet. Sorry I don't recall the numbers involved although I sort of recall single digits but I won't swear .......

In my room ATC 19s measured about 8 dB up at 30 Hz and this is a speaker with a Qtc of 0.5 so it still sounded clean. I wonder what less well damped speakers(most of them) would have done? ::: TOPIC:: .......

Small ATC speakers are closed box. I don't believe they are acoustic suspension. That being said I have lived with two pairs for months and they are superb speakers. .......

But you have AR 2AXs which are a 3 way with 3 1/2 " mid and 3/4" dome tweeter. He has aAR2s with double 5" tweeters. Your speakers are very different in the upper frequencies. However your correct abo .......

Yes it's correct and if the power supply were big enough the 4 ohm rating would be as high as 600 watts and then the bridged 8 ohm rating would be 1200 watts. .......

Many class D amps use switching power supplies which replenish the caps many ore times than the 60 times a regular supply does which is dependent on the 60 Hz AC. So the smaller caps supply much more .......

If perk up the sound means you find the amp too sweet, I suspect you can improve things by tube swapping but you can't get rid of the basic sweetness of an SET amp. It's a result of high 2nd harmonic .......

Wild guess. These were equalized with old tube amps with low damping factor. I wouldn't use old transistor amps, not as reliable as modern solid state amps and very high damping factor. Unfortunately .......

The statement should be most push/pull amplifiers are Class A/B since all single ended amps are class A since you can't turn off the out put device without turning off the amp. Almost no push/pull amp .......
