While I found it had good tone, I found the Schick a bit soft and smeared compared to even the humble OL Silver mk2 I had previously. I didnt think it could keep up with a SME IV of my mates I had use .......

Honestly, I think the arm is the weak point in your rig. I had a Schick arm for a while with my Garrard 401, and I found it was bettered fairly easily. For me, changing it out got better detail and mu .......

Very nice! OL arms to well with a Garrard. But, please avoid the Kokomo. I have seen first hand the damage their ceramic balls can do to a steel spindle. And the newer model with the plastic disc suck .......

But the way I read "high voltage traffo" is the mains tx. If you look at the schematic linked above, TR1 - (which I referred to as the mains tx since it is hooked directly to the mains) supplies both .......

Nice arms, but I love this Kiwi arm. I have had OL Silver, SME 309 modded to a IV, Thomas Schick 12" all on my 401 - and the Analog Instruments Apparition waxes them all. Not even close. More of every .......

My Sun SV-2A3 is highly musical with great drive and extension. I love the sound it makes and I dont see myself selling it. But, it is extremely sensitive @ 150mV, so good pre-amp matching is critical .......

Do you mean the 620 cab? I had my 604s in a JE Labs OB for a few years. The sound was nice and open, although I like my GM designed cab much better. They JEL OB is quick and easy to build, about 8 hrs .......

I have Elrog 845s and they pale in comparison to OS RCAs. However, it is a low power circuit and that may be a factor. YMMV with 211s. .......

It depends really on the tolerances and the wear on it. Garrard had several different diameter of bearings they used that surround the spindle, I would asssume to compensated from production differen .......

Dont forget new felt washers - or make them yourself. Check your thrust bearing and if it needs replacing, the jclolvemusic "Exact" bearing is well regarded these days, and I have installed them too. .......

My friend built this circuit, although he modded it to a 12HG7/845 using dual 6DA4 as rectifiers. It runs the tubes very conservatively (for the GM70 the design is about 450v on the plates) and sounds .......

In the eighties I had a Grundig Majestic - but I never knew the model - just that it was a Grundig! It had a valve amp/receiver (but not the vents) which I pulled out of it. I put my HK receiver in it .......

I had a SLP-98P for about 8 years. The EH tubes definitely did not do this rig justice. You should mix different types of tubes in the front and rear positions (2x each), and you will get the benefits .......

Sounds like the switch does need to be aligned properly for the linkage to fully engage. Try using some penetrating oil or WD40 to help ease loosening the nut. Pics would help diagnosis. .......

I used the light bulb trick with my 301. Then I got the correct size pulley from the UK, and the sound got waaaay better. It needs the torque that the voltage provides, IMHO. .......

I just put the variable resistor in to try to get the most out of the cabs and was always going to replace them. With Ricks xo in the big MLTL, the bass was a bit dry and thin, so I dialled in a 3R. .......

I rolled quite a few 12AX7s through my mate's that I had. The best sound I found was with a Siemens E83CC in V1, 50s long black Plate RCA in v2, and a Tele 801S in V3. The 801S was better in that slot .......

Garrard's grease and oil bearing models used different bearing parts. The sintered bronze in oil bearings are porous and will clog with grease. There are lots of threads discussing this on VE and PFM. .......

I use 90w grear oil in my 301 and my 401 as they both had slight bearing slop when I got them. They run like a top now, dead on speed. Use a lighter viscosity oil if your table runs a bit slow. ::: T .......

I used to have a P3 - and then I got the 401 which I took the RB300 off of at first to have a go with the 401. Same arm/cart and after one listen the P3 never got hooked up again. Sold it with the RB3 .......

The MC tests should be a very reliable on a calibrated 539B. A particular tester may test a bit high or low compared to another tester, but the tests should all be internally consistent for his tester .......

The 40s tubes are not as nice as the early 50s Bad Boys IMHO. In the various gear I have had, the bass has been slightly fatter and less well controlled, and the 40s tubes have less sparkle on top. :: .......

For the most part I was very happy using a DIY 45 SET with my GPA 604 8H-IIIs. The only thing lacking was a bit of headroom for rock music. Second favourite amp so far is another DIY 845. Much better .......

Which version of the 7? If it is the earlier ones with the vertical tweeter, and offset woofers, that has great drivers. The ones that have all the drivers mounted on the vertical centerline are nice, .......

My experience with the Siemens-Munich E83CC is similar to Fender Lover's. I use them in the phono section of my pre- and they are my favorite tube in that slot. More balanced up and down - excellent h .......

You should make sure that all the drivers work, and that you dont see/hear any damage/distortion from any of the drivers. If you hear something amiss, but dont see any damage to the drivers it may be .......

Occasionally we all get lucky. Last week I found a TS RP 6SN7, Brimar 6SN7 black glass, and two RCA grey glass 6v6GT - all test as new and got them all for about $12. :-) .......

H have a V15 III and a Benz MC Silver as well as a Benz S-Low (used to have an L2). The S-low is way different and way better. More resolving, more detailed, better bass, better mids, better highs.... .......

I too have a bunch of these had very reasonably - and the type on the left with the extra support rod and the flat plates is the one to get. They sound great when following a richer tube like a TS RP, .......

Yes he fixed the hum and it was totally silent. Then the pre went into a storage, and a rat got into it and pissed on it. That corroded the din connector in the pre to the psu, which went unnoticed b .......

I have a Cary SLP-98P that had a low level hum that largely went unnoticed until I got some hi-eff speakers. Then it drove me nuts. Turns out was a problem in how Cary did their design for the ground. .......

I second the CBS/Hytron 5814A and I got all 6 of mine for an average of less than $10/each last year and a half. Four were NOS and the others tested like it. I also have a sleeve of NOS RCA Command 58 .......
