i have read good things about this amp - someone said it's the best sounding el84 amp, others think it's heathkit's best sounding amp. even if this is hyperbole, i can surmise from the discussions tha .......

thanks for the heads-up. upon 1st glance, i thought this amp allowed phase reversal of both channels. seems it would be best yust to bypass the switch & pay attention to the +/- speaker polarity conne .......

hi bob, you were right - the problem must be impedence matching. hooking the sherwood up to my fisher mpx100 produces glorious sound, even before swappng out the cap. :>) i will also try my fisher fm9 .......

hi ed, if i were in europe, changing the deemphasis from 50us (their standard) to 75us would make things *duller*, not brighter. here in the usa, 75us is the standard; 50us from this euro-spec decoder .......

the adcom gft-1a is equal to the m-d, both sonically & reception-wise. this opinion is based upon 1st-hand experience. don't waste yer money on m-d tuna, unless you *must* have that look. then, yust s .......

while many (most?) commercial fm stations *do* suck when it comes to sound quality (to say nothing of programming), there are many (mostly public) stations with fantastic sonic quality, & good program .......

while i can't say i *never* soldered before i modded my di/o, i *almost* never soldered! ;~) still, i was able to succssfully mod my di/o, even biasing the (now socketed, upgraded) op-amp into class a .......

woltage is *not* increased w/the 9vac-rated atari or stancor power supplies. but, they will substantially improve the sound of a stock or modded di/o. prior to any mods, i got a stancor, & the improve .......

two digital tunas i *know* that can be tuned for lowest distortion are the revox b261 & b760. the b760 can be tuned in 0.0250mhz intervals, the b261 in 0.0125mhz intervals. may be others... revox tuna .......

hi bob, well, based upon my experience w/ec amps, & an older ec-1a preamp i sued in my rig for several years, i'd recommend it if ya need a 1-box solution, & are afraid of toobs... ;~) i haven't heard .......

i formerly used one of tripplite's ~$270 2400w surge supressor/woltage regulators for my amps, & boy, did the sound ever improve when i decided to plug the amps straight into the wall! :>) these thing .......

i use a keith monks record sweeper; used to use a similar watts dust-bug. these li'l arms w/brushes track the disc while playing; keeps the records in fine fettle. when needed, a wash over the sink w/ .......

the xm-9 is a generic active x-over; it will work w/most any passive subs & monitors. plug-in x-over frequency modules, 24db/octave slopes, & a "damping" wolume pot to adjust the level *at* the chosen .......

the fletcher munson curve is in effect even w/o subs - full-range speakers have this same phenomenon - frequency extremes appear weak at low wolumes. if anyting, having outboard subs allows adjusting .......

well, according to the specs, the gft555ll fits right in between the gft1/1a & the gft2. so, i'd surmize that the gft2 is cut below, while the gft1/1a is a cut above. but, i've never asked adcom about .......

i'd stick w/yer 1st thoughts. yust add a marchand xm-9 crossover into the equation. transparent enuff so ya can cross over to the monitors instead of running the monitors full-range. and flexible enuf .......

so i'd definitely go the subwoofer route. but, i'd recommend two subs, make 'em passive, & use outboard active x-over w/outboard amps. while it may initially seem intimidating, it's actually easier to .......

the *best* option, imo is a passive sub, w/outboard active x-over & separate amp. two subs being even better. in your case, i'd run your mains full-range, and cross the sub over as low as possible. i .......

haven't heard this unit, but the art di/o dac is excellent, even bone-stock. modded, it's truly amazing. folks on harmonic discord said the ci dac wasn't even close, & this was not an up-to-date-modde .......

call bag-end, & ask them what the max spl is, at 8hz... you'll find it to be *WAY* down in response. even at 20hz, these subs are way down in response. i was seriously considering a pair of their dual .......

hi, it's a nice fono-stage, for sure. a big one, easily as large as a full-sized preamp. it will do mm thru lo-output mc. it does have selectable gain/impedence, but i don't have the figures here. dis .......

origin-live sez their modded rb250 is better than any of the other rega arms - even the o-l modded ones. they say that it's cuz the different bearing set-up responds more favorably to the mods. i'd st .......

as many have said before, it's system-dependent. if a speakers' woofer requires 400w to really crank, then one 400wpc amp would be better than two 200wpc amps run in bi-amp fashion. as the paradigm's .......

kal is right - the woltage gain has to be the same for each amp. but what yure wanting to do is *horizontal* bi-amping; *wertical* bi-amping is one stereo amp on each speaker, w/left & right channels .......

i used to run my nad 515 cd-changer into an ase z-man, & then into 1sat, electrocompaniet ec-1a preamp, then linn kairn preamp. in both cases, the z-man was essential in order to not be driven outta t .......

before mk-l? there was no mk-l there was oracle delphi, then mk-ll! ;~) i also have an original delphi. i replaced the motor & power supply w/an origin-live dc motor kit - it works great. was not too .......

you're correct about the marchand xm9 - that's how i am able to get a seamless blend w/my monitors & vmps larger subs. the x-over "damping" wolume pot is set to -2db, & i get flat room response, as me .......

two larger vmps subs, optioned w/megawoofers & soundcoat, will outperform anything at anywhere near the price, imo... they are passive, meaning you can choose a much better, more flexible active x-ove .......

years ago, when i lived in-town, & an omni antenna had an outside possibility of working for me, i tried an st-2 a buddy gave me. i mounted it outside on the roof. a rat-shack dipole worked *much* bet .......

this is a nice unit. but, i'd go for riken-ohm resistors in the analog output stage, replace the caps & resistors on the digital board, swap out the stock voltage regulator #1 w/an lt1086, and bias th .......

orpheus, i used a cheap rat-shack 40w soldering iron, & their cheap desoldering iron w/built-in bulb to do all the mods to my di/o successfully. well, i take that back - the soldering iron broke inter .......
