Those Mundorfs are what I had Rogue put into my Cronus Magnum, simply because they were the only quality caps that would fit. They were a definite improvement over stock but I didn't get the sound I w .......

they might do it. Copper caps provide a harmonic richness I haven't heard from any other caps. I had Rogue change caps for me in my Cronus Magnum, though copper caps wouldn't fit. .......

I love my Amber II. The Amber line, IIRC, replaced the Level 4 tier. The USB input (older Amanero board) on the Amber II however, is of inferior quality. It was significantly bested by both Schiit Eit .......

I own a Lampizator Amber II (~8 years old and $2200 at that time) and a Schiit Bifrost 1 Multi-bit with Unison USB (less than half the price). The latter is a few years old but of course the Unison US .......

I agree. I don't know the technical reasons but on the one hand I found SACDs to have more soundstage spaciousness, more three dimensional images, and more tonal richness than CDs. All of which I love .......

I agree that Kleiber's 5th is a good rather than great performance but I think his 7th is even less successful: too driven. The best 5ths I've heard are the Reiner/Chicago and Honeck/Pittsburgh record .......

I only have one filter: the iFi SPDIF iPurifier. That goes into my Schiit Modi Multibit external DAC. The Wyred For Sound Mod is designed to be used with an external DAC. So the choice was between $1 .......

I second Mr. Marks' wonderful find. The sound quality is the best I've heard in the Beethoven quartets and the playing matches it. My experience is that a good recorded performance at a moderate price .......

not all of the sets that may have some good performances. I recommended just the Wand because it's the only set I've heard that has more than five excellent performances (and only Bohm and Karajan '77 .......

Tastes vary tremendously. If you like very fast performances than the Leibowitz and Harnoncourt sets mentioned might appeal to you (I find the former perfunctory and the latter aggressive/angry). No s .......

Actually with new production power tubes I've found the sound deteriorates significantly after 2000 hours. This with 6550s, KT66s, EL34s, etc. from a variety of manufacturers, using a variety of amps. .......

IMS, IMO, the Genalex re-issue are better than short plate NOS GE 12AU7s. The Genalex are, in fact, to me, very similar in sound to the NOS long plate GEs, which is high praise. The GEs might be a tad .......

I had Kimber 12TC: they were pretty good as long as they had gold plated or copper connectors: otherwise too bright. You might want to try Triode Wire Labs speaker cables: less expensive than the 12TC .......

I've tried every tube type that my Cronus Magnum can take. I much prefer the KT66 over the KT77, which was my least favorite tube type for that amp. YMMV. .......

I can comment on both as I had the Cronus upgraded to the Magnum. I checked over some of my earlier posts on both amps (it was quite a while ago) and found that the original was indeed rather limited .......

I find I get a more coherent sound from mine using Genalex KT66 re-issues than I do using any other power tubes (and I've tried them all). Obviously a bit of power is lost but they drive my 86db, 8 oh .......

It's not something they would do on the original Cronus Magnum, so I doubt they would do it now. The phono stage is not an add on option. However, I just saw Abe's post below stating they did swap it .......

If you don't need the extra power, I think the Cronus Magnum (which I own) sounds better (more coherent and tonally accurate) with KT66s (55wpc vs. 100wpc with KT120s) than any other tube. ::: TOPIC:: .......

I agree. I have the AE P4s with the AE N22 integrated, fronted by a Squeezebox Touch and the sound is incredibly musical for the price. And yes, they are improved by positioning near a back wall. ::: .......

I have a Cronus Magnum. I've tried several cables with it and like the Kaplan HE MK.2 best. The Triode Wire Labs 10 American also worked well but I've yet to hear the 7+ or 8+, which are likely much b .......

As has been pointed out the Cronus Magnum is limited to in it's circuit design to 90 wpc. It does have more headroom and sound louder/more dynamic with KT120s than KT88s, 90s or 6550s. My speakers are .......

I have and am not impressed with them. Seem lean to me. I prefer the JJ Tesla short plate (warmer) or Shuguang (more resolving and balanced, if somewhat forward overall). Likewise I prefer the JJ Tesl .......

If you go for the Cronus, get the Magnum. It's far better than the regular unit, not much more money, and allows you to use a wider variety of tubes. As Abe mentions, the KT120s are particularly good. .......

There are a number of tube amps out there that are advertised as being able to use any variety of pentode power tubes: EL34/6CA7s, KT66/6L6s, and KT88/90/6550s. A friend brought one over, an auto bias .......

I changed all of the fuses in my non-magnum Cronus and it made for a significant increase in clarity and resolution. The tube fuses, perhaps because there are four of them, made for the largest differ .......

Although I like NOS tubes, in the case of the 12AX7 they tend to be very expensive. Exceptions are Japanese brands from the '70s (often made in a Mashushita factory Mullard set up), or GE long plates, .......

as I have a MHDT Havana NOS DAC which goes for $900 new and sounded really nice even stock. It's very natural and organic sounding without any digital nasties. There was a bit of dryness to the vocal .......

I'm not sure but I think you have to run a signal through the caps for them to break in. The unit will get a lot better yet. I prefer mine to the CJ Premier 17LS2 I owned and the Act 2 I had on loan .......

I own the Modwright Platinum Sony 999 and have had the Ayre CX7e in my system (for a few weeks). Both are excellent players but the Modwright Sony is superior in resolution, imaging and tonal quality. .......
