I am now driving a 2003 Subaru Outback VDC with the McIntosh stereo. I know, it is a Clarion system (Clarion owned McIntosh back then), but it was designed by McIntosh. It sounds great at lower speeds .......

I can't help you with the VS speakers, but one bit of advice: First select your speakers, then select your amplifier. Different speakers will have very different needs and synergies with various amps. .......

Here's another vote for the C220 from another owner. I also upgraded the tubes, but to less expensive Mullard reissues. In addition to more detail, these tubes lowered the noise floor of the C220 sign .......

I've heard the VSA 4JR and I agree they are smooth, but just didn't justify the price tag, IMHO. They only really sounded good to me with a $5K amp that I can't afford. In my price range, I am looking .......

I would avoid Pioneer recorders (now available in the used market only). I had two of them go bad - some known issue with the laser getting easily knocked out of alignment. I now have a Marantz CDR-63 .......

BTW, I do have both a TT (Thorens/Shure) and CDP. Let me explain a bit further: I know my cartridge is too old (~15 years), and that even with infrequent use, cartridges must be replaced every 5 years .......

I would also audition Vandersteen 3a in your price range. They are not tiny, but they should be smaller than the Martin Logans. The Vandys do need to be placed properly, but they're easier to position .......
