I'm sitting here listening to EML solid plates in a pair of Welborne 45 mono amps - they sound very good/great (better than older 45s such as RCAs and National Unions which sound very good also but no .......

Sorry for the basic questions, but are you saying that if the amp is built as per the schematic/spec, that any 45 should run - but that if it happens to be setup for 50 mills that the tube will sound .......

ARC will always prefer their tubes and they might tell you they don't have confidence in GE 6550s, but personally, I would always go with GE 6550s (JAN NOS if possible). The GE's just plain sound bett .......

If you want an ARC amplifier for under 10k that puts out 200 watts you should definitely consider the original VT200 (which is different than the later MkII). The VT200 is a fantastic sounding amplifi .......

Why not just buy a pair of well maintained DQ-10s? they wouldn't be easy to find but they are probably out there - maybe $500-$700 for the pair. You could buy an ARC SP-8 MkII and a VT200 for the bala .......

I have heard 3.6s with a VT100 III and VTM200s. I have also heard a VTM200 (orginal, not a MkII) but not with the 3.6s. In my opinion, the VT100 III is the clear third choice, both sonically and power .......

Well, with stacked Quads you should have a very nice sounding system. Next to the speakers, I think the cartridge is likely to produce the most significant impact on the sonic signature of your system .......

There are a lot of variables here (and certainly every system will vary), but it sounds like you had your preamp gain control up to about 3 o'clock on the dial. My experience is that with many systems .......

A 6B is a fine preamp. It is a true tube unit with a phono input, and inputs for tuner, tape, and 2 aux. Some ARC fans would tell you that it is similar to an early SP8, but maybe not quite as good as .......

There is no dobut that an SME 3009 will match extremely well with a Shure cartridge - they were nearly made with each other in mind. And as you say, for a Shure cartridge you couldn't (I don't think) .......

datman, Thanks! Is your amp the latest version of their 200 watt per channel stereo amp? I presume you are running the Quads with one amp, not two...? Also, any chance you could move over to the speak .......

Well, in the mid 70's I had a couple D76As and a SP3A1; they may have been the best sounding ARC gear I've had. Since then I've had a couple analog module units (not bad, but not good), and some other .......

I think you helped zoom in on how ARC has evolved/changed. The term "euphonic" is something ARC uses itself if you call them; they seem to use it with a mixed connotation (something like "old and char .......
