After having owned two of them over the years, I can say that they are not all they are hyped up to be. Too dang much futzing with is needed for operation, and they really aren't any better than a go .......

On my diy amps I just put a volume control in each channel as an extra measure of adjustment. Dual balance controla I guess. .......

I don't use it for lubrication, but rather as a solvent for disolving old dried up grease & oil like you find in turntable motors that have been sitting idle for 20 or 30 years. The trick is to flush .......

Take a look at the Denon DL-102 cartridge. That's what I use for mono through two speakers and I couldn't be happier with the results. .......

Not quite a no brainer. You can buy a kit for rebuilding both sets of Quad panels for $250 fom Austrailia including shipping. Has a good instruction manual and if you take your time you can have a goo .......

I owned a pair of maggies for a couple of years (the tall version) and found them a tad bit on thr shrill side. I was driving them with a Cit V too, which I have since sold. Regreting that decision at .......

Found these two at a local thrift today. Always amazes me how good they sound.... great fidelity and low surface noise, especially with my denon DL102 mono cartridge. A lot of great music out there .......

Actually, I have already tried a 110 volt muffin I have that I can plug into the aux outlet. It made a big difference in the temperature of the unit, so I will install it permanently if I keep it. Wil .......

Found an FM-3 tuner on craigslist. I have gone through and checked all the tubes and cleaned the sockets and pots. I replaced a couple of tubes that tested marginal. I think it sounds better now than .......

The 2 track tapes can be worth some bucks, especially the RCA orthophonic ones. Do some checking on the bay and you will be pleasantly surprised I think. .......

I have owned K-horns, cornwalls and 19's. I kept and still have the 19's. Adding a pair of velodyne 12" powered subs really made them shine though. Before that the bass was a tad weak on low organ not .......

The two wings of the hum pot go to the filament (with the resistor in one of them) and the center wiper goes to a 3.75k resistore and 47uf cap in parallel that ties to ground. Is that what you mean in .......

By using a resistor on one pin only, I got the 211's to 10.08 vdc. For the 6sn7's I was able to use a resistor on each pin and I now have them at 6.25 vac. Anything beyond this seems a bit obsessive t .......

Over the years I have gotten in the habit of putting an equal value resistor on each of the filament pins, but wouldn't one of the right value on one pin work just as well? I don't have the right valu .......

The 211 is a tube that is still fairly easy to find as NOS and not nearly as expensive as the 845. Check ebay. It might be fun to try the ones from China to see how good they are, but it doesn't have .......

Not that big a deal. I depend more on my ears than I do test measurements for sound quality. If it sounds good it is good. I mainly want the scope for trouble shooting. Not every voltage in that amp o .......

Negative. I just used 1/2 of each tube for each channel. Bruce Berman suggested doing that in a SP article sometimme back (issue 13 I think). He thought it would work better, and it sounds good to me. .......

I am now running a 13.5 volt tranny for the 10vdc supply for the output tubes. By the time it gets to the tubes it is exactly at 10 volts due to variuos losses. I also am using a common, center tapped .......

Ok, I finally got juice to the filament by using the 4 outside corners of the choke. I have about 9.6 volts of dc on the filament. Trouble is I now have no sound in that channel. I have rechecked all .......

Changed the CMC connections to just the outer most terminals, and now I am getting juice to the filaments, but no sound. Is there anything in the choke hookup that could cause that? No sound only in t .......

It's a three phase bridge, I looked it up on the internet. Here's the data sheet. http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datasheet/sanrex/DF20AA120-160.pdf Looks to me like if you use any two of the ac termi .......

I took out the cap and the resistor and just went straight to ground with the center tap. The hum is less now but still way louder than just straight ac. Is there something wrong with the diagram? ::: .......

I think it is. It has three sets of terminals with the wave symbol for ac and one set with a plus and minus for dc. When I put the dvm probes on the + and -, I get 10v dc. .......

He really did not make a recommendation, but pointed out that the RH series is a lot of bang for the buck. He also mentioned an article in the RCA tube manual that looks like it should help me adjust .......

Using ac on the filaments of both the 211's and 6sn7's on my low power 211 breadboard, and I have noticed the hum seems to vary from time to time. Can't say it always happens, but it generally seems t .......

I don't think the 125ese gets quite the respect it deserves. Paul Joppa did an article in either SP or valve magazine sometime back that basically said they are a lot of opt for the money. They can be .......

Those numbers were measured off the bread boarded amp I put together some time back. It worked just fine. If there are errors in the schem it is most likely because I measured something incorrectly. T .......

Thanks to the sober one, I now have a little music and much noise coming out the other end. I think it is motor boating, so I am guessing some sort of oscillation is the culprit? Problem is, it is too .......

I guess it takes one sober trouble shooter to find the problem. : ) When I focused in on tracing back from the opt CT I discovered that I had connected the CT to the wrong cap. We now have sound comin .......

Welll... you were partly right. I checked the resistors and I had put in 270k instead of 270 ohm. Now the reading between 0 and the anode is 270 ohms, but I still am only getting a reading of .5 vdc a .......

Checked some voltages and found I have nothing showing on the anode. Why would that be? I noticed that the cathode voltage on the output tubes is too high, 50vdc vs the 12 it calls for, could that be .......

I did check everything, just to be sure. Like I said earlier though, I have noticed the same effect before in signal circuits of amps that I have bulit. If an amp is sounding a bit to bright I will so .......

I concur with the smoother, but not the better, with all the foam in. I ended up using it just on the left side of the left 811 and the right side of the right 811. I am sure different room acoustics .......

Well, pulling the cap and putting in a three wire cord with the ground to the chassis certainly helped. The ac on the chassis dropped from around 7v to about 0.9v, and it stopped kicking out the GFI. .......

I have a eico hf-32 mono integrated amp that seems to have ac voltage on the chassis. The power cord is not three wire, only two, but there still shouldn't be voltage on the chassis even with that sho .......

Finally got around to hooking my diy set 71a amp up to the model 19's tonight. Now I admit the amp is at 3/4 throttle and the pre is at 1/2 throttle, but we are talking a whopping 1.5 watts per channe .......

Does anyone know what exactly a eye tube looks like when it goes bad? Does it go completely dark or does it do something else if it's not the heater that's the problem? Mine lights sup, but not as bri .......

When I first got the 500B the tuning eye tube was working fine, nice and bright with clean ends for tuning. While I changed out the caps I had it turned upside down. When I turned it right side up aga .......

Actually I think I have another option ..... build a cap board that gets fastened to the inside bottom of the cabinet with the caps siliconed to the board. I did find enough kbg's to do both crossover .......

In a buying frenzy this morning I found enough KBG's to do the trick I think. Some 10, 6, 4 and 1 mfd units that I can parallel to get the right values. I figure I can always use them for another proj .......

Those are some honker caps. Did you put them in the bottom of the cabinet? I generally shy away from PIO in the signal path unless I have a brightness problem. They tend to have a damping effect in m .......

It could happen, but I can't imagine what speaker it would be. I have owned Klipschorns, JBL olympians and Klipsch Cornwalls and these beat the pants off all of them. The only popular, semi-affordable .......

Finished changing out the caps in the other model 19 tonight. What can I say..... they are now the best speakers I have ever owned or even heard. Every single aspect of them improved with the new caps .......

I use caps as tuning tools. Each type and brand has it's own sound, so I like to roll the caps until I get the sound I am looking for. You can do the same thing with different types and brands of resi .......

The only way that I can think of that a chassis material might influence the "tone" would be if it insulated microphonic tubes from vibration or caused some interaction with a signal if it were metal. .......

That's sort of what I thought from various articles I have read on home brew amps. JC Morrison is a big proponent of running the output tubes with high current for that very reason. I must admit thoug .......
