Well, for one thing horns aren't necessarily directional, that depends on the horn. I used horns with horizontal patters as narrow as 60 degrees and as wide as 120 degrees. .......

I suggest one Altec 604 or one Harbeth C7ES-3. Both do midrange and vocals like butter. The Altec is also VERY sensitive and will play VERY loud without distress if you are keen on that. .......

JBL was using 4" voice coils 70 years ago. And not just on woofers but on compression drivers too. Altec used 3" woofer voice coils but went to some with 4" coils about 50 years ago. .......

A possible advantage to bi-amping is the ability to use tubes on the compression drivers-horns and SS on the woofers. Many hornies run such rigs including a Tannoy user I knew. I ran several such rigs .......

I think the best sounding 15" woofers are the Altec 515 and 416, mainly because of their lifelike upper bass and midrange. These drivers are now made by Great Plains Audio if you don't want used ones. .......

New ones are not needed. Used 825-828 cabinets (those used with A7s and A5s) are plentiful and you can buy new "true" Altec drivers from GPA (Great Plains Audio) or have GPA rebuild your old Altec dri .......

In my considerable experience bolting the 811 horn to a sturdy baffle and putting non hardening modeling clay in the "lips" does the trick. Same with 511 horns but 511s do benefit from sawing through .......

Note that just because a speaker is high efficiency doesn't mean it's going to be more dynamic, have more "oomph" as you say, than a low efficiency speaker. The speaker must be capable of high output .......

The driver can be used but will need an adaptor to go from the threaded driver mount to the 2 hole bolted flange mount of the horn. Such adaptors are widely available. .......

Frankly it's hard to think of a better way to use that stuff than the way Altec did. Maybe a Carmel with 3000G brought in high where the 804s are dying, maybe 10,000-12,000 cycles, but you'd need a DI .......

I have no idea what is the best horn tweeter but I can say that I never heard a better horn system using tweeters than ole Paul Eizik's dipolar system that uses EV T-35s and T-350s with the T-350s poi .......

IMO VOTs, especially A5s, give reproduction as good as anything between 100 and 10,000. Weaknesses are lower bass and upper highs which can be fixed with good subs (they must be subs capable of tracki .......

I used Edgar saladbowls for awhile and liked them. Funny thing; after starting with 811s and 511s and then playing around with various horn flares from JBL, McCauley, EV, Edgar, Klipsch, Emilar, Klips .......

I've used Radians in 2420 and 2410 bodies and been pleased. Now some folks prefer aluminum to titanium and it could be that the Radian aluminums are right up their alley when dealing with later JBLs l .......

Most L-100s are still working but many if not most old Maggies have fallen apart; the "voice coil" wires become seperated from the diaphragm and the wires also break. The first gives you a flapping sp .......

1.4" exit drivers like the 288 should not be necked down with adaptors to 1" throat horns; the result is uneven response and higher distortion. Adapting up works fine but adapting down doesn't. Your 2 .......

I went to the shop of the guy who builds them when he had an open house (with wine and cheese no less). They sound OK as hi fi speakers, I was surprised how much of the high frequencies made it out. B .......
