Yeah I've seen many Fishers with broken power switch. Sometimes he switch can come apart inside and short the power to ground. The usual remedy is to bypass the switch and then use an outlet strip wit .......

Hi Eli, Each phono connector pair is riveted into a black phenolic strip that attaches to the chassis by a rivet at each end. Mouser's Kobicon replacement is a bit longer and the connectors are a bit .......

My HK Citation 17 has rows of dual phono jacks on the back. Problem is the plating has failed and the bare steel is exposed and beginning to corrode. The jacks are similar to Kobiconn KC-300972 (from .......

I used test lead wire for the higher voltages and spade terminals for connection to a screw-type terminal block because I won't be disconnecting it very often. .......

If you change the output tubes the bias will have to be adjusted. Looking at the schematic I don't see a bias adjust but only DC balance. A bias pot (or optional: pots, 1 for each channel) whould need .......

You would have only 30 volts drop across your 6AS7 pass tube, not enough. I suggest around 150V plus ripple across the pass tube. Also, the pass tube need not be 6AS7. You can use a triode-connected 6 .......

OK it's working now! Problem was I forgot to install a board mounting screw that is down between the main filter caps. This resulted in a missing ground connection. So, the amp worked with the resisto .......

OK thanks. I found some 3 Watt bulbs listed at donsbulbs.com for $9.50 each. I don't know the wattage Empire used but it couldn't have been much or things would get hot. 6S6 I think would be 6 Watts. .......

Got a used Pickering XV15 but the outer shell slides off easily because the glue has come loose. There is a loose copper strap inside that contacts the stylus lever. So do I just shove it back togethe .......

I have an old tube with the bulb painted with the Mullard logo and GZ34 and under that, 5AR4 but the base has the General Electric logo oon it and says GE Electronic Tube. What's up with that? ::: TOP .......

Thanks Dave. I see Mac used 330K plate resistor, if they can do it, I can do it. This was a kit so who knows about the wiring, have already made some corrections but the phono amp is not so obvious. : .......

Just rebuilt a HH Scott LC-21 Preamp. Those 270K plate resistors in the phono amp are way noisy. I suppose I could replace with carbon films but I think the real problem is, they should be 100K. Also .......

The seleniums should have a "+" on one end which is the cathode end. Silicon diodes are cheap so I always use the 1000V rated diodes. A 1N5408 diode is rated at 3 amps and will replace any selenium yo .......

You got the AO-15 amp. It's a dual amp and could be rewired to run a quad of 6V6 or a pair of 6L6 or maybe even KT88's through the larger output transformer. It also has reverb driver and recovery. Yo .......

You may add a one ohm resistor in the wire to the cathode of each output tube. Then measure the voltage across the resistor. 1mV = 1mA. .......

The 105 degree caps don't contain water in the electrolyte. Also, electrolytic cap life decreases with temperature so I suppose the 105 caps would last longer. .......

If you ground one side of the bridge rectifier then the winding center-tap becomes a half-voltage point and cannot be grounded. If you need a bias supply you will need to add a capacitor (.047/630V)be .......

Connect the ammeter between the variac and load because at lower output voltages it is possible to draw excessive currents and overheat part of the winding or burn the brush even though the total powe .......

Selenium rectifiers can fail in a messy way with arcing and melting. Also they have a high reverse leakage which has a bad effect on electrolytic capacitors. And they continue to drop more voltage and .......

You can use 6AT6, it doesn't have as much gain but may have enough gain. Also you can install 1N34 diodes across the tube diodes and soup up the detection and AGC. Only you will know they are there. : .......

It's a "safety ground" and needs it's own chassis connection. Should be a bolt & nut. If there is a power-to-chassis fault, the safety ground may have to pass sufficient current to trip a 15 or 20 amp .......

Well there are ways of finding out... An ohmeter will find the filament pins. Then use a signal generator and apply 1kHz signal to the pin you think is the grid. Bring a scope probe near the tube and .......

RCA made a production out of some RF tube data sheets such as 6146 that were popular for RF transmitting. But for audio you need high plate dissipation because you are running the tube hot constantly. .......

Looking at the schematic it seems you would connect the volume control wiper directly to the balance pot. If this results in too much gain I suppose you could use a resistor to make the connection. :: .......

Does the TT have a separate ground wire connected to the preamp chassis? Grounding to the preamp is usually not via the interconnect shields but uses a separate ground wire. Also no 3-prong AC ground .......

It's true some variacs hum and buzz even with no load. Other than that, you can check how your amp sounds at various plate voltages, or use less voltage to save the tubes, or run 6V6 instead of 6L6 fo .......

I use them and also check out the Solar caps sold by Antique Electronics and others, for instance there is 47uF @ 630V. The DC rating of motor run caps should be 1.4 X the AC rating so your 550VAC cap .......

It's not that 5 ohms causing the heating. It may be the primary idling current. Also, transformers can run hot, too hot to hold your finger on, but how hot is yours, need to use a thermometer. ::: TOP .......

You are running into the woes of using SS rectifiers. Are the output tubes screen grids protected from the 600V initial surge? Plenty amps use SS rectifiers but not with choke input. .......

Sounds like you got a nasty power line surge, maybe caused by lightning. MOVs and fuses provide some protection. Digikey sells those chokes, mostly used in switchmode power supplies to keep noise in/o .......

6L6 was used in a lot of equipment and some excellent amps used "worse" such as television horizontal deflection tubes that were never intended for linear operation. The amps use feedback to make them .......

The 12AX7 will not give your expected gain, as you can see. You need a power tube to drive a 10K ohms transformer. Maybe 6AQ5/6BQ5? And is the transformer loaded correctly with a pair of 5K on the sec .......

If the main supply uses SS rectifiers I suggest bypassing the rectifiers with .01uF caps, especially with choke input filter. Helps prevent diode death from line transients and from inductor kick. ::: .......

Mostly, 12AX7 has more gain and so is used more as a voltage amplifier. 12AU7 has more power handling capability so finds use as a driver for cables or power tubes. .......

No doubt a good tube, but in the 60's too many sets came in for microphonics and it was the 6SL7. Replaced a lot of 12AT7 too. I forget the brands, many were re-labeled with store brands anyway. ::: T .......

That's one reason so much home equipment uses unbalanced - it is assumed the components are close together. Versus a studio with equipment all over. Also unbalanced uses cheaper cables and connectors .......

Well you always gotta have a continuous loop for the current. With unbalanced, one side is ground (because it's "grounded", connected to chassis) and the other is "hot" or "signal", for instance like .......

Sorry I am of no help either, DSP is a large IC with microcontroller functions, no picnic to replace. There is a good chance you could spend a lot and still not get the thing to work. .......

Some "wall wart" AC adapters do not have a rectifier and may be used also. May be cheaper and more convenient than a bare transformer. .......

I suggest tube power amp since it interfaces with the speakers. I use SS preamp and tube amp. But may depend on what kind of music you like. Vinyl = tubes. CDs with wierd sounds seem to like SS amps. .......
