Interesting you should ask as I just today listened to a pair of 1.7s being powered by one of these amps (Cayin A 88T), although it was the MkII version that uses 4 x KT120 output valves. I believe .......

I've used Jensens as output and/or interstage couplers in many projects, and I've noticed that unlike film caps they seem to "warm-up" significantly and sound much better after 30 minutes of current t .......

Looks good. I built a Foreplay with a similar layout a few years ago and it works fine - very low noise. For convenience, you could run the wiring for the power switch along the side and up to the fro .......

The plan looks good and I doubt you'll have any problems from the heater wiring. The interior will get hot if you cover the enclosure entirely - a few ventilation holes along the top of the rear panel .......

If increasing the overall capacitance works in your application, and you have the room available in the chassis, try also replacing a small number of high value caps with an array of many low value on .......

Rather than having replaced the Solens with caps which have a warm sound, it could be that you've replaced them with a more transparent cap which is not overlaying the naturally warm sound of your sys .......

Personal preference - solid wherever possible, especially for signal circuits. Solid core also bends more neatly and holds its shape (but don't cause stress fractures!) and can be run along chassis co .......

I've tried both oil caps and foil 'n plastic caps in power supplies and either is superior to an electrolytic in the "last" filter position. IMHO it's not that either of these is inherently great, but .......

OK - gotcha - it's a noise filter across the mains. The initial cap was almost certainly faulty - you should be able to just throw mains voltage into it with no problems. .......

The 907 wand comes as standard with the 936 station and it's unlikely you would need a backup for this. It is actually quite light and thin in comparison to some other soldering wands - I find it a jo .......

Click on "passives". The examples shown are stereo, you just need one side and no volume control. The single point ground is probably unnecessary in your case, but can't hurt and is probably the easie .......

I'd get the Mullards. I tried many, many types of 12AU7 and related tubes - NOS and new production - but when I finally heard genuine NOS Mullard CV4003s (which aren't that expensive) I bought 4 more .......

I can relate to that - there are definitely some supurb NOS valves, but the recent production stuff is very good. The JJ ECC82/12AU7 is a nice valve for a good price, as is the Ei and the Electro Harm .......

The sell both. Everyone sells both. You use linears as trimming pots for biasing, regulator control, etc. - anything which needs a constant variation. You use logs for audio attenuation. .......

You can either use a log pot or a shunted linear pot (or an attenuator with an appropriate log progression) but not just a linear pot by itself. Hearing is not a linear sense - we perceive logarithmic .......

Compared with passive attenuation any valve preamp will have a little noise but excessive hiss could well be due to the valves. If the unequal volume problem does move channels when you swap the valve .......

What are you getting out of the transformer's filiment secondary when it's unloaded? If it reads a volt or two over 12.6 then it's definitely a 12.6 secondary and you'll need to wire the filiments dif .......

The RF-3 is a fairly sensitive speaker - 96dB or more I think - so any of the amps you list will work OK, but the push-pull "Joplins" from DIY Hi-Fi are considerably more powerful than the other two ( .......

In that context the "K" means +/-10% tolerance. CMC is probably the code for the type of capacitor (eg metallised polyester) but it's not a code I recognise off hand. Cheers .......

This is probably an over-simplified answer, but basically they're not needed. Valve amps require a supply at high voltage, but low current. The best way to achieve this is with moderate value high vol .......

For the input make up a switch box to go between the source and the preamps. Use any 2 pole switch with several positions, but wire it in reverse so you have one input and several outputs. Connect eve .......

I've used JJs and Electro Harmonix and there is no question - the Electro Harmonix are better in every way. I'm not sure exactly which factory makes them, but don't be worried that they are a Sovtek p .......

Try using the single core cable which is used for domestic wall cavity electrical wiring. You should be able to get 12 feet of this from any hardware store for a few dollars. Banana plugs or spade con .......
