Thanks, yes I know that. The scroll chart for my tube checker is extremely limited. I think the only 5v rectifier it has is for a 5U4, not the same as a 5AR4 / GZ34. .......

In audio I've really only see RC decoupling and yes, at the top of a plate resistor. I suppose L coupling is an interstage transformer - which work well. The size of the cap would depend on the impeda .......

Never easy to find hum issues. One key is to determine if it is 60hz hum or 120 hz hum. The 60 is bound to be ground loop, but the 120 comes from a power supply someplace. My preamp (as Tre' also does .......

Thanks all for the suggestions. As was mentioned, these do need some power, I've got a Mac MC2105 for that. As for up grades, I've rebuilt the cabinets with 3/4 MDF, vari-vent on the back, Morel MDT20 .......

Years ago (20?) I acquired the iron for a Fisher 500C and not too long ago (2 years) bought a quad of 7591's (new, not NOS). I did that because I've always heard such great things about the 500C sound .......

I hear you! I really didn't want to do it, but I took it slowly and carefully (there are two C clips to remove and I'm notorious for loosing those!). I used 3-1 oil to clean and lube the suspect me .......

I built a similar circuit 15 or 20 years ago. It was great, IIRC it was a 6L6 driving a 300B, but I recall I did enjoy it. As mentioned, a two stage is simpler and does not need to include a choke or .......

Yes I built a WE91 style amp with the MQ iron, I compared transformers with a pair of AN I had, also electraprint and James. MQ was best in my opinion. .......

Does it have to be new? I used an ADC XLM on my TD160 for a long time and really enjoyed it. You can get updated and better stylus now for them. A well regarded cartridge, no doubt about it. ::: TOPIC .......

Agree with the regulation problem. Large caps can also give you a pretty significant lag as you try to adjust the bias supply (been there) and, consequently, easy to overshoot or undershoot the bias s .......

The SE84 is a triode wired pentode, which is a different sound from a real triode. Also, as someone pointed out, it is indirectly heated, the "purist" approach is directly heated triode, like a 2A3 or .......

I don't think the balance control is out of circuit in the middle, though the tone controls are. You probably know this already, but a balance control is linear taper while the volume is audio tapered .......

I've done this for years. Often turning 9-pin holes into octal sockets, etc. My oldest, and most frequently used, punch is 1 1/8" for octals that I inherited from my dad who I know for sure had it sin .......

I was also thinking 6L6 but the extra fill tfr will be a tight fit on that chassis. I think if it were me, I'd sell it and start with an amp designed for 6V6, the Bell 3030 comes to mind. .......

I've owned a few pairs of A25's and yes, the cap replacement is needed, and easy to do. You'll find the box fully stuffed with fiberglass, so be aware of that mess - and don't change the quantity of s .......

I use a variation on Wayne's "4-pi" speaker and they work well on a variety of amps from 45 SET to 60w PP. Very smooth, good bass reach. I do think the 15" JBL 2226 needs a bit of power to sound it's .......

I don't remember what model my Cinemags are - it's the "top tier" one, but not sure the number. My cartridge is the ZYX Bloom. I will say the Cinemag's are more sensitive to placement and hum pickup. .......

Having worked on a lot of equip from that era, I'd be amazed to see anything smaller than 1/2 watt. Plate resistors typically 1 or 2 watt, but easy to figure (V*I) I derate by 2x to 5x. So if I get 1/ .......

I had a Scout, it was replaced by a Thorens TD124 which I thought was a much better table. The 124 was replaced several months ago by a Classic II, which bettered the 124. .......

Unless I'm missing someting, the schematic as drawn will not work, the HT is "grounded" at the KT88 cathode via a 750 ohm resistor. Also, 6SL7, even paralleled would have a really high plate resistanc .......

Modifying the ST70 to an integrated should be pretty easy to do. You can give up the front octal sockets (only useful for bias testing) and use one for attenuator and one for selector, or if you don't .......

Use a variable voltage source and pass a current so that 1ma flows. Measure the voltage. Internal R = v/i. That R becomes one part of a parallel circuit. You know 1ma across, at a particular V, so the .......

My personal favorite is the Bell Carillion 6060, but can be a bit pricy these days and hard to find. Bell made a 6V6 version, the 3030 - also a very nice integrated. .......

The Piccolo is a very different kind of design. It uses 6 2SK389's per chanel, and a bunch of power supply circuitry. The Boozehound head amp uses one 2SK170. Very simple and works perfectly for me wh .......

I've tried the original Aperiodic port, and based on Boxplot models of the woofer, tried it in a larger ported box (IIRC it modeled out to 35 hz or so!). The ported box was always bloated and I didn't .......

A woofer tester would be handy - Parts Express has them for around $100 IIRC. You can find specs on recommended replacements, however. Of course that assumes that the replacement has the same frequenc .......

A couple years ago I tried the Tubes 4 HiFi board and found even the low gain version too hot, and eventually replaced with what had been in there - the Triode Electronics board that mimics the origin .......

Bypass? Or decoupling? I don't remember seeing many (any) bypass (i.e. smaller cap in parallel with bigger caps) caps in vintage amps. Or are you referring to cathode caps? .......

So which set up did you use? If you'd been playing the Technics SL 1200 w/ a Denon DL 103, no wonder you took a break! (just poking fun). The DL103 has never been my favorite except to align, got to g .......

I think, however, the bandwidth figures on the Trancender site were at only 1w output. .......

I'm also enjoying my new (ok, slightly used) ZYX R50 Bloom. It replaced my Grado Sonata and Denon D103R (both going up for sale soon). One of the things I think is so remarkable with the ZYX is the ab .......
