BTW, if you go ahead, do check the screen voltage in the Velleman circuit before the switch. I don't read Japanese, but based on the datasheet it appears that the max screen voltage on the 6G-B8 is 40 .......

As others have noted, the 6G-B8s should work fine with but too much gain for the Velleman amp circuit. IMHO those 6G-B8 are rare and should be preserved for the amps that required them. Your friend ca .......

I checked datasheets for 6bk11 substitutes and found none. Some writers claim 6K11 is a sub, but its low mu triode is like a 12au7; too different to sub for the 5751 triode (with amplification of 70) .......

Yes. If pins 6 and/or 8 were connected to the cathode for the 6s3p, then the EC86 should not have worked from the beginning, meaning that 6&8 are unconnected. My understanding is that EC86 oscillates .......

Looks like EC86 connects pins 6 & 8 to the control grid. If your preamp is wired for 6s3p this means the grid and cathode are connected when you plugin a EC86. Not sure how it worked at all. ::: TOPIC .......

My guess would be ventilation. The lifted sockets on pins allow for some ventilation and the taller tubes in then most likely have higher heater currents and possibly higher plate dissipation. ::: TOP .......

The Mullard 5-10 is suggested as an example of a good implementation of EL84 Class AB1 PP. But I have not seen any description of the EL84 operating conditions in this design. The Mullard 5-10 design .......

If they are "dirt cheap" why not give them a try? They will be safe, low ESR, according to the spec sheet, and probably better sounding than nearly all electrolytic caps. Have you considered the alter .......
