Sounds like maybe the tape you're playing has lost lubricant. I just use silicon on the guides when it's minor. Usually does the trick. .......

Nope. You can't tell by looking at the tape or by touching it. While back-coating is NOT the reason for sticky-shed syndrome, all of the tapes that have SSS are in fact back-coated, so that's one sign .......

Congrats, it's a nice deck, I have two of them. The Radio Shack tape is ok, nothing special. It's probably best on normal bias (note that the bias and eq settings only help get closer to ideal - only .......

I've bought hundreds of pre-recorded reel tapes from eBay over the last decade. I'd say 75% were untested, and of those, 90%+ played just fine. And these days it's never an issue as a buyer getting a .......

Well for me there would be no question - sell the 5050. It's a nice deck, but not nearly as good with tape handling as either the BR-20 or the A810. And it's easy to acquire another 5050 if you ever r .......

Sorry, perhaps I was mistaken - the head cleaner I use daily is alcohol based, but the "stronger" one I have used in extreme cases appears to be dimethyl butane based. Maybe that's like naptha? ::: TO .......

You can buy a 7" reel of Capture tape from Splicit.com for like $25. And it should make a great sounding recording!!! There are a lot of old tape formulas that have issues with Sticky Shed Syndrome, i .......

Why not buy a brand new reel of RTM or Capture tape, which for sure won't be shedding oxide, and find out? That's the easiest way. I had a 3340S for years, great deck. .......

If you like jazz, check out the Clare Fisher "Extentions" and the Tom Harrell. Great stuff. And not hideously expensive, although not cheap. I've purchased a lot of 7.5 ips vintage prerecorded tapes .......

I've used Howard's Restor-a-Finsh followed by Howard's Feed-n-wax, and the results have never failed to impress. For deeper scratches, apply the Restor-a-Finish with 0000 steel wool. Great stuff, work .......

Did you put an ear to each driver to see if you hear sound from each? The driver wires on the HPM-100 are not soldered, so they could have come off, but the clips used are pretty snug - I have to pull .......

I've always loved this record, and I own the original pressing (even has the sticker!). The MoFi is head and shoulders above it. As has been said, vocals are cleaner, bass is meatier and better define .......

I do use tone controls. Good tone controls are a lost art, but the ones on my SX-1980 are reall well implemented - two bass and two treble controls, with fine gradations. They actually are really usef .......

To the SX-1250, SX-1280, Marantz 2285, and Sansui 9090DB...all of which I currently own. I prefer the 1980 over all of these. It's just the cleanest and most dynamic, IMHO. But I greatly enjoy all of .......

It's not in the same league as my Benz LP-S, but then, it was 1/5 the price. And IMHO the DL-S1 does indeed beat some of the Benz carts closer to its price range, like the ACE (which I do think is exc .......

Certainly a few amps were designed that can use either a 6SL7 or a 6SN7...but in most cases they will not be interchangeable as they are different. .......

I cannot comment on the Panasonic, but I owned a DP-80, and I think the 59L is quieter, and sounds better. JMO, YMMV, etc etc. I sold the 80, but I still have and regularly use my 59L. .......

One of the greatest things about wet-vacuum cleaning your records is it's one and done. I clean then when I get them, and they don't need cleaning at play time. I also use a Denon DP-59L in my man cav .......

You can get an adapter and use the 6C8G - it's essentially a 6SL7 with less gain, but the pin out is different and it has a grid cap, so you need adapters (which you can buy on eBay - the same that wi .......

I was *really* impressed. They went in my Ming-Da MC8407-C headphone amp, as the driver tube, where they replaced Mullard CV4004, which are pretty awesome tubes. The output tube in this amp are EL84's .......

They are decent sounding. I think I prefer them over the current-production Russian 6SN7 types. But they do NOT sound better than even a run of the mill Sylvania 6SN7GTB. Not worth the money, IMHO. :: .......

The EH 6SN7's are pretty bad sounding, so that is for sure where to start - even basic Sylvania or RCA 6SN7GTB's will sound better, although lately I have seen Raytheon and Sylvania 6SN7WGT's selling .......

I LOVE reviews that discuss the effects of tube-rolling. The reviewer should comment on the sound of the stock tubes, sure, but many audiophiles are going to roll, and there are very few NOS tube type .......

The 6080 is identical in performance to the 6AS7G. The 6AS7G is a ST/"Coke Bottle" glass type, whereas the 6080 is straight bottle. I almost universally prefer the 6AS7G. I have about 100 6AS7G/6080/6 .......

Since you have tried new tubes, that seems to eliminate that, but did you make sure the pins were all nice and clean? You might also try blowing some contact cleaner into the tube sockets. This helped .......

Those are real Tung-Sols. I have a pair with the green labels like that. Only Tung-Sol made the 5998. They did OEM them to WE who dubbed them the 421A, but the 421A is just a rebranded Tung-Sol 5998 ( .......

I think the biggest issue here (aside from the potentially very real problem of the tube sockets wearing out, as mentioned) is the fact that tubes need 30 minutes of warm-up time to sound their best. .......

I agree 100%. The current production 6SL7's sound BAD to me. I have a Cary/AE phono preamp that uses 6SL7's. My favorite are the Tung-Sol 6SU7GTY in it, but you can get Sylvania VT229's for under $50/ .......

It's a really nice tester, does test mutual conductance, and of multiple tube sections. One caveat - it does not test the 6BQ5/EL84 or the 5670/2C51 (out of all the "popular" audio tubes) unless you g .......

No question that I can hear the differences in various 6AS7G-type tubes that are the power tubes in my Singlepower, Woo, and Darkvoice amps. I can also very easily hear the difference between differen .......

Looking at the tubes they do look like a lot of blackplate USA made 6SN7GT's, yes. And I guess if you were to fake Zalytrons, it makes sense to fake the premium ones, not these. But it did seem odd - .......

I have seen that some people are selling 6F8Gs on EBay including adapters so they can be used in place of 6SN7s. I was tempted to try it, but wasn't sure whether the adapter made it a drop-in replacem .......

In Smith and Buchanan's "Tube Substitution Handbook", Revised Edition (1998), it lists the EF86 as a good substitute for the EL84. The Handbook is not about listing EXACT substitutes, but usable ones. .......

So it's hard for me to tell how close those readings are, but from what I can tell, I would call that an "OK" match, not a close match. But again, maybe with that tester those readings are closer than .......

First, there is the 7C7, which is the loctal-base equivalent of the 6SJ7. If you can make a loctal > octal adapter, you can use 7C7's. Second, and I *cannot* vouch for this as a universal substitute, .......

The best two indeed are the JAN/Phillips 6SJ7WGT's mentioned by -3dB, and the RCA 5693 "Red Hots". I vastly prefer a glass-envelope tube, so I am a fan of the JAN/Phillips. These are the only two kind .......

The 7N7 is definitely the loctal-base equivalent of the 6SN7. I have some loctal > octal adapters, and have used the 7N7 in place of the 6SN7 using the adapter. I have RCA and GE 7N7s, which I assume .......

I have seen one source indicate that a 6AH4GT is equivalent to the 6C19P (which is for sure equivalent to the 6S19P). If that is true, you get some really nice NOS options, like GE, RCA, Sylvania, eas .......

Another long-time StyLast user here. I have never had any problems with it, and no doubt in my mind that it helps minimize surface noise. It will stay a part of my vinyl regimen as long as it's still .......

With my Denon DP59L, you can change tonearm armwands between straight and S. I tried them both, and strongly preferred the sound of the straight arm. Less groove noise on a larger percentage of the re .......

It isn't the best of the Denon DD decks, but it's not bad. The tonearm is kinda fussy to set up tracking force correctly, but if the DL110 on there is properly aligned, it will sound decent! They sell .......

And the better Denon DD tables are VERY good sounding. My DP-59L with a Benz Wood L2 is outstanding sounding, and compares well to $1000-$1500 current belt drive tables. Rob "Let there be songs, to fi .......

I had a Glider and I still own and use an L2 wood. The L2 is better than the Glider IMO, in almost every way. More open and transparent, better bass, etc. Rob "Let there be songs, to fill the air" :: .......

This I just DO NOT understand. Why does Sony try to wreck it's product launches? I was so mad when their first SACDs were all single-layer -- this was a tremendous marketing blunder. Now their first B .......

Yes, I bought a more expensive cartridge (Benz L2), but still. Mine hooked it up to a scope and the whole 9 yards. I am pretty good at aligning cartridges myself, but in this case since there was no c .......
