Why? Good question. I am using an Apogee Firewire DAC on an Apple for almost 2 years already, the USB guys have discovered the async mode and are shouting out halleluah. The sales man explained me 2 y .......

I dont't know if all this is true, I use almost 2 years a Apogee Mini DAC (into an Ayre K1x BTW), and the fact is that I have never bothered about making the comparison between USB and fw, since I kno .......

Why don't you hold back the 100$ and wait a few months and have a look at the Apogee Duet or Mini DAC? They are made for MACs and take all benefit of its FW connectivity. I use the mini DAC with a Mac .......

When you set the OSX in the audio/midi tool to 192/24 there is a fixed 192/24 connection over FW from the MAC to the Apogee. The applications that run under OSX will do their Sample Rate Conversion to .......

Apogee included a disk with drivers. Installation and configuration took me one minute. Yet the sampling rate adjustment through the MIDI settings is voodoo to me... The DAC locks to anything from 44k .......

This is one of the reasons I really like the ML380S I am using, there is no other preamp (as far as I know) than the ML's that have such a nice volume control. In the critical range it steps at 0.1dB. .......

You can check out the Chord DSP-8000. It has analogue bypass for 7.1 for SACD and DVD-A. I am not sure about how many sets of inputs it has however. You could mail Chord about it. Is not a cheap solut .......
