I admit to liking Glenn Miller. I picked up yet another album of his a few months ago too. This one was different in that it is 10" version of "The Glenn Miller Story" on RCA RPT 2001. .......

I brush each record with a carbon fibre brush, and I brush the stylus with a small stylus brush. Every now and then, more often if I am playing unwashed records, I clean the stylus with fluid. I use a .......

I believe most people put a spot of superglue on the pulley and push it back on. I still wonder why Rega has such a following when you see all these problems :-) .......

I think I mentioned that is what I do. No sense screwing up a nice sound trying to get more bass from a fullrange. Better to choose for efficiency and mouth-watering midrange, then add a small subwoof .......

Rubbery suspension parts often perish with time. Luckily on many cartridges, these are part of the stylus assembly and therefore replaceable. I always put a new stylus on an old cartridge before using .......

Just listening to a nice Belafonte album, and looked it up on allmusic, and it appears to be his very first. Mark Twain and Other Folk Favorites - RCA L10021 Very easy to listen to, and in pretty good .......

especially if playing secondhand records, it is easy to get it so dirty that just brushing it will not remove all the dirt. When playing unknown records, I often clean with fluid after each one. ::: T .......

Yes, it was cheap. $3 here (about $2 US i s'pose). Vanguard in Australia were pressed and distributed by Astor, but still with the Vanguard labels and heavy vinyl. Good pressings too, the sound is won .......

I brush mine without removing the headshell. Just turn the brush upside down and stroke it from back to front (in the direction of normal vinyl travel). .......

Are the records new and undamaged? Inner track distortion is fairly common if the the setup is out, and may possibly damage the records, so if they are secondhand, or you have played them a lot, then .......

Mine are AC, but speakers are unkown efficiency (they are old 10 magnavox full-range in TQWT's, so fairly efficient though) I have typical hum pots on them, and the ac filament noise nulls right out s .......

In old integrateds they used to put a can on the mag preamp valves, but I suspect that was because of the electrically noisy environment inside the amps. I have built a couple of separate phono preamp .......

43 volts divided by 400 ohms is 107.5 ma, (300-43)*0.1075 = 27 watts ! Unless I am doing something wrong, that sounds a bit high. I run mine at 60ma and about 15 watts. Isn't 850 ohms a more typical c .......

Most good anti-skate devices provide variable force as the arm moves across the record. The aim is to, at least, approximate the changing skating force. .......

My experience is that dust covers can collect vibrations, especially from the speakers. Even if not transmitted through the plinth/suspension, they can reflect sound down onto the record surface if th .......

You need to try three positions initially 1. as low as it will go, 2. mid way, and 3. as high as it will go. If either 1 or 3 sound the best, leave it there. If 2 is the best, experiment between 2 and .......

Not always. My brother has a Benz MC and an all tube system. I think it sounds too bright, but he's always preferred it that way. Has a lot to do with your hearing too I suspect. :-) .......

I think Dylan is only featured on the Midnight special track itself. I didn't hear much on the rest. It IS a very nice record though. Especially as I only paid about $1.50 in US money :-) .......

I have a nice Grundig console downstairs. The Grundig record changer uses those long silver Philips ceramic cartridges that plug straight on the end of the arm (like an early version of p-mount) First .......

Using EL34's and different pentode in the front end (even tried it with 12A*7 front ends too). When it was my main amp, I used it without the global feedback - it didn't need it :-) It did put out 10 .......

How does pumping backwards make sense? Speakers perform symmetrically, forwards or backwards. Say they were putting out a sine wave (to simplify the example). Reversing the polarity has the same sonic .......

It depends on the units you are using. If you talk, in decibels (dB) then you can add them because it is logarithmic. If you a talking 'times' gain, i.e. it has a gain of x times, then it multiplies. .......

The headshell has two fixed screws, so it is not easy to get much adjustment of the cartridge (only the small amount of movement you can get due to the fit of the screws throught the holes in the cart .......

The abodes are themselves metal shields that protect the low level signal on the grids. Crosstalk is usually very minimal. Oh and there are some dual triodes that have a shield. I use two 12AX7's that .......

For most preamp circuits, it matters little whether or not signal present. The DC bias conditions are the major 'stress' on the tube, and usually they are hardly stressed at all, no matter what you do .......

Definitely sounds like feedback at the bass frequencies from speakers to the platter/vinyl. Try repositioning the speakers in front of the turntable so the sound is projected away from the record. ::: .......

it's a statistical thing. Chances are the more correction bits you add, the better the chance that any errors that occur can be corrected. Yes, the error correction bits have the same chance of being .......

From the problems you describe, then it's not surprising they sound worse. You should get zero (or very near zero) errors when copying, and there should be no cracks and pops at all. There is no audib .......

Depends on how loud you like it, but most people in the average size living room, only use a very few watts. 89dB isn't too bad, so I suspect you'll do fine. I don't think you'll need 20 watts. ::: TO .......

That's not correct. All power supply generation is controlled within tolerances. It's the average supply that should be very close to 60 Hz. As you play a record, many variations may occur. To debunk .......

You can fit about 10 albums on one CD and still get acceptable quality. MP3 CD players are quite cheap now ($125 in Australia). Of course you need a computer to 'record' them. .......

Why not try it? The cork sheeting doesn't cost too much. To cut it I used one of those utility knives with a multi-section blade that you break off the end section when it get's blunt. Just put it on .......

A 6B4 SET amp should never have negative feedback IMHO. ... and you are right, hard to get one to oscillate, but that said, I really doubt you will hear a small grid stopper in a power stage anyway. .......

I have a Garrard Synchrolab 65B and also, my favourite, a huge Grundig Trento Console with a grundig/philips changer and push-pull valve amps (and a great MW-SW radio). Great for getting the nostalgia .......

More difficult, yes, but only to a degree. It isn't that hard for high output cartridges, provided some basic rules are followed. Single point earth, good shielding and layout, CLC power filtering, DC .......

Nope, sprung suspensions (without damping) will always cause a problem like this. You need a highly damped, vibration absorbing support under a high mass TT/plinth, or else remove the vibrations by us .......

Sorry, but it's a DIY circuit published in the RCA tube handbook. Here's a link to a hand drawn copy of it on a website. This, plus maybe one more tube as a buffer if you are driving long interconnect .......

I was invited to audition a new system. All valve except the phono preamp. Power amps are EL34 parallel PP, preamp a simple 12AU7 system. Speakers were 3 way floorstanders. The system sounded very nic .......

Depends on what appliance and the condition of the contacts. Older, or burnt contacts will cause more arcing, particularly for inductive loads (like motors) that can cause a longer static type of soun .......

micro-surgery is possible. I have successfully used a sharp implement to create a deeper groove to convinve it to play it straight. Not a nice solution, but it makes it playable .......

Yes, the early warnings on stereo records were purely because of the many super heavy tracking weight, low compliance mono cartidges out there (which BTW ruined mono records as well :-)) It never was .......

Actually, different construction does not make a tube deserve a different name necessarily. Just look at the huge difference between a Sylvania 6SN7 and most others. They are still 6SN7's however. ::: .......

That's a common problem, and I don't think it has anything to do with the 44.1/48kHz issue. Good software will keep it in sync, but many 'video recorders' fail. I found Virtualdub to be good at mainta .......
